About The Position

The Allentown Parking Authority is seeking a dedicated and empathetic Parking Enforcement Officer to join their team. This role focuses on serving the community by building positive relationships, promoting fair parking practices, and ensuring the city remains accessible. The Parking Enforcement Officer is an Essential Employee responsible for enforcing various parking ordinances, treating everyone with respect and fairness, and prioritizing customer service. The position involves community engagement, educating the public on regulations, responding to inquiries, monitoring areas for enforcement, issuing citations, and working with community organizations. The role requires working under limited supervision, being responsible, self-motivated, and self-disciplined, adhering to rules, and learning the geography of Allentown to provide directions. Additionally, officers must report hazards in parking areas and maintain accurate records of citations and interactions. Conflict resolution with tact and diplomacy is also a key aspect of the role.

Requirements

High School diploma or GED
Must hold and maintain a valid driver’s license and record in compliance with requirements established by the company’s auto insurance provider
Must be able to ride a bicycle and pass a bicycle certification course
Must be able to walk 4 to 8 miles a day, sometimes over uneven terrain, bend and stoop multiple times a day, and lift up to 35 pounds
Must be able to operate a motor vehicle in all weather conditions
Prior experience in customer service, community relations, or law enforcement is preferred
Employee is an Essential Employee and is required to report to work and work outside in all weather conditions
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to remain calm in stressful situations
Proficient in using technology, such as handheld devices for issuing citations
Proficient in Microsoft Word
A positive attitude with a focus on community well-being
Empathy and patience in dealing with diverse populations
A commitment to fairness and integrity in all actions

Responsibilities

Act as an ambassador for the Parking Authority by providing courteous and helpful interactions with residents, visitors, and business owners
Educate the public on parking regulations, helping them to understand the reasons behind the rules and the benefits to the community
Respond to public inquiries and concerns with professionalism and empathy, offering guidance and solutions where possible
Monitor designated areas to enforce parking regulations, ensuring fair use of parking spaces and compliance with local laws
Issue citations for parking violations when necessary, explaining the reasoning to drivers and offering information on how to resolve the citation
Work closely with local businesses, schools, and other community organizations to address specific parking concerns and needs
Report any hazards or issues in parking areas, such as broken meters or obstructed spaces, to a supervisor for resolution
Maintain accurate records of citations, warnings, and interactions with the public
Handle disputes and challenging situations with tact and diplomacy, aiming to de-escalate tensions
All other duties as assigned
