About The Position

Enforces all city parking rules and regulations by issuing citations for illegal parking. Assists the general public by giving directions pertaining to the location of buildings and streets throughout the city. The incumbent reports to a Bureau Commander, receiving instructions weekly. Plans and carries out regular work in accordance with standard practices and previous training, exercising substantial independence, considerable judgment and tact in answering inquiries and determining correct course of action. Most work is performed outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions. Paperwork tasks are performed under typical office conditions. Flexible work schedule allowing for occasional work outside of normal business hours, including evenings and weekends. Work involves standardized tasks, operations and procedures, involving little analysis and evaluation. Incumbent is expected to use initiative in coping with unusual situations and circumstances and to resolve them. Technical and policy problems are discussed with superior(s). Errors could result in legal/liability issues for the city. Has access to confidential information pertaining to auto registration and driver’s license and other department related records. Constant contact with the public. Other contacts are with the businesses, and tourists. Contact is usually through the telephone, email and in person regarding complaints, as well as registered mail.

Requirements

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • No prior experience required
  • Must possess a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Able to attain certification for NCIC Computer “Spots.”
  • Knowledge of City parking regulations and areas
  • Knowledge of geography, streets and roadways within the City.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Operate portable radio and personal computer
  • Exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and in making decisions
  • Follow verbal and written instructions
  • Prepare written reports, court complaints, summonses and other written documents as required
  • Complete data entry and record keeping functions through computer software/hardware
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city departments, the public and other agencies and personnel.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols assigned areas to identify illegally parked vehicles.
  • Use SPOTS to identify vehicle registration and driver’s license information; enter ticket information and photos into computer.
  • Issue citations to persons whose vehicle has violated parking regulations, in accordance with Parking Ordinances.
  • Process ticket payments; maintain and process late notices.
  • Assist the general public by giving general information and directions.
  • Notify Police Headquarters of disabled vehicles or citizen complaints pertaining to the Department received verbally during the tour of duty; transferring this information to Headquarters via portable radio.
  • Maintain cash receipts on all parking citations given; review records to determine citations not paid and prepare paperwork for mailing of second notices of unpaid parking violations.
  • Prepare all paperwork for delinquent parking citations for Court such as Complaints, Warrants, and Summons; testify in Court.
  • Perform traffic direction activities as assigned.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment relative to tour of duty (Portable radio and chalk marker).
  • Assist in Records Department and Animal Control when needed.
  • Perform other such duties as required.
