About The Position

Parking Enforcement Officer Trainee positions are assigned to the Police Department or the Stormwater Department in a training capacity. In the Police Department, duties include patrolling City streets for parking violations and safety hazards, issuing parking citations, driving a three-wheel vehicle to enforce regulations, marking tires, reporting broken meters, running vehicle registration checks, communicating with police dispatchers, controlling traffic, providing general information to the public, responding to parking complaints, preparing daily journals, performing daily vehicle safety checks, and other assigned duties. In the Stormwater Department, duties include removing litter and debris from roadways and curbsides, performing storm patrol, maintaining, installing, and repairing street sweeping signs, and other assigned duties. Positions cannot be filled prior to July 1, 2026. Eligible benefitted employees originally hired on or after July 10, 2021, will be automatically enrolled in the San Diego City Employees Retirement System (SDCERS). Candidates selected for Police Department positions will undergo a comprehensive character and background investigation, including a polygraph examination and fingerprint check. Felony convictions, domestic violence convictions, or use of illegal drugs may be disqualifying. Candidates screened by the San Diego Police Department must present proof of education when submitting their Background Investigation Questionnaire. Employees may be required to work nights, unusual shifts, weekends, holidays, and a 4-day/10 ½-hour schedule. Employees will be required to perform frequent stooping, bending, squatting, reaching, twisting, repeated entering/exiting vehicles, and/or walking up to nine hours per day in an urban setting with exposure to noise, exhaust, hard surfaces, and steep inclines. Employees interact daily with the public who may become angry, difficult, and/or abusive. Stormwater Department employees must be able to lift 20 to 50 lbs., shovel curb gutters, and may be required to work storm patrol, including filling and setting sandbags and clearing storm drain gates. Employees must successfully complete a six-week parking enforcement training program.

Requirements

  • 18 years of age or older; except for high school graduates (or persons with GED equivalency) who are 17.
  • United States citizen or have the current legal right to work in the United States.
  • Valid California Class C Driver License required at the time of hire.
  • Must successfully complete a six-week parking enforcement training program.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience enforcing codes and issuing citations.
  • Experience in customer service which includes sensitive, adverse, or confrontational situations with the public.

Responsibilities
