About The Position

The North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources (DNCR) manages over 100 locations across the state, including 27 historic sites, seven history museums, two art museums, five science museums, four aquariums, 35 state parks, four recreation areas, dozens of state trails and natural areas, the North Carolina Zoo, the State Library, the State Archives, the N.C. Arts Council, the African American Heritage Commission, the American Indian Heritage Commission, the State Historic Preservation Office, the Office of State Archaeology, the Highway Historical Markers program, the N.C. Land and Water Fund, and the Natural Heritage Program. The Department’s vision is to be the leader in using the state's natural and cultural resources to build the social, cultural, educational, and economic future of North Carolina. The Division of Parks and Recreation is seeking an enthusiastic team member to fill our Park Ranger position. A Park Ranger provides educational programming, natural resource management, law enforcement/emergency services, seasonal employee supervision, administration, operations, and maintenance. The Park Ranger is a commissioned law enforcement officer and will enforce state laws and park regulations through patrol, education, warnings, citations, and arrests.

Requirements

  • Obtain successful results in physical and psychological examinations to include drug testing and a background investigation as required by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education, Training and Standards Commission.
  • Ability to maintain a valid NC driver's license and meet DOA Fleet Safety Policy and guidelines to drive a state vehicle.
  • Ability to successfully complete various required training for NC State Park Ranger within the required timeframes.
  • Bachelor's degree preferably in Parks and Recreation and/or Natural Science from an appropriately accredited institution OR Equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in accordance with the provisions of the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment.
  • Must have a valid driver's license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90 days of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Researching the natural and cultural resources found at the park and developing and implementing resource management plans to include prescribed fire and invasive species removal.
  • Preparing and conducting environmental interpretation and education programming.
  • Performing and directing emergency medical response and emergency rescue in the park and other parks upon need.
  • Assisting with maintenance of park facilities for routine maintenance and minor repairs, as needed.
  • Performing in operations, facility upkeep and/or administration of parks, attractions, other outdoor recreation areas or visitor focused programs.
  • Issuing facility permits, open, and close facilities, and purchasing equipment and/or supplies.
  • May hire and supervise temporary/seasonal employees.
