About The Position

The Cosumnes Community Services District is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time Park Maintenance Worker position on the Irrigation Team within the Park Operations Division. This position is primarily focused on irrigation system maintenance and operation, including the management, troubleshooting, and repair of centralized irrigation systems such as Motorola and Calsense. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring the efficient operation of irrigation infrastructure throughout District parks and facilities. This position may be required to work a variety of shifts, including weekends, holidays, and after-hours emergency response assignments. Park Maintenance Workers in the Park Operations Division are represented by Teamsters Local 150. Under general supervision, performs a variety of semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work in the construction, modification, maintenance, repair and operation of District infrastructure including parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, golf course, sports fields, swimming pool, and public restrooms; and performs related work as assigned.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
  • Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience performing parks maintenance duties in a municipal or similar setting.
  • Must possess a valid California class "C" driver's license with a satisfactory driving record as determined by the District and maintain it throughout employment.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, tools, and materials for maintaining and repairing irrigation systems and appurtenances.
  • Knowledge of basic mathematics.
  • Knowledge of safe driving rules and practices.
  • Knowledge of basic computer software related to the work.
  • Knowledge of the operation and minor maintenance of a variety of hand and power tools, vehicles, and light to heavy power equipment.
  • Knowledge of operational characteristics of specialized maintenance and repair equipment.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work, including the handling of hazardous chemicals.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
  • Knowledge of English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors and District staff.
  • Ability to perform construction, modification, maintenance and repair work on irrigation systems and appurtenances.
  • Ability to troubleshoot maintenance problems and determine materials and supplies required for repair.
  • Ability to perform assigned maintenance and repair duties with accuracy, speed, and minimal supervision.
  • Ability to operate specialized maintenance and repair equipment.
  • Ability to interpret and apply the policies, procedures, laws, codes, and regulations pertaining to assigned programs and functions.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
  • Ability to make accurate arithmetic calculations.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use and operate hand tools, mechanical equipment, power tools, and light to heavy equipment required for the work.
  • Ability to perform routine equipment maintenance.
  • Ability to maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to organize own work, set priorities, and meet critical time deadlines.

  • Mobility: occasional sitting and use of keyboard; frequent standing for long periods of time; frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, climbing ladders, crawling and twisting, while performing field work; frequent pushing, pulling or lifting objects up to fifty (50) pounds while performing maintenance and repairs, loading trucks with supplies and equipment, and assisting with the set up of special events;
  • Vision: constant use of overall vision; occasional computer use; occasional color and depth vision;
  • Dexterity: frequent repetitive motion; frequent writing and occasional typing; frequent grasping, holding and reaching; frequent operation of equipment such as, but not limited to, lawn mower, hedge trimmer, pressure washer, wire tracer, airless sprayer, irrigation controls, hand and power tools;
  • Hearing/Talking: frequent hearing and talking in person and on the phone or radio;
  • Emotional/Psychological: frequent decision making and concentration, frequent public and/or coworker contact; occasionally works alone;
  • Driving: ability to use fine and gross motor coordination for driving a variety of vehicles and equipment such as, but not limited to, car, pick-up, equipment trailer, mowers, tractors, tillers, skip loader, front-end loader and trencher.

Nice To Haves

  • Certification as a playground inspector, pesticide applicator, pool operator, or other closely related certification or license is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, maintains and repairs parks and recreational facilities such as, but not limited to parks, parkways, landscaped corridors, medians, golf course, swimming pools, sports fields, and public restrooms;
  • Cleans, maintains and repairs fixtures such as, but not limited to signs, shade structures, walls, fences, gates, tables and benches, sand bunkers, golf course holes, etc.;
  • Conducts work tasks safely and in compliance with department safety standards and the CSD Injury and Illness Prevention Program;
  • Responds to emergency calls for repairs, particularly in instances which involve public safety;
  • Completes and maintains reports and forms as necessary;
  • Uses and maintains a wide variety of hand-operated and power-operated tools and equipment;
  • Uses and maintains large and/or heavy equipment; maintenance activities may include checking wires, batteries, and performing oil,tire, or blade changes;
  • Cleans, opens and closes public restrooms;
  • Plants shrubs, flowers, trees, and performs other horticultural duties;
  • Mows, edges, weed-eats, and aerates park and/or golf course lawns, greens, fairways and rough;
  • Empties trash cans, replaces liners, and removes trash from various sites throughout the District;
  • Installs, maintains and repairs irrigation systems, responsibilities include but are not limited to, sprinklers, water lines, drinking fountains and associated facilities;
  • Performs basic plumbing such as, but not limited to, cleaning plugged drains, replacing washers, gaskets, and faucets, etc.;
  • Required to work a variety of shifts including, but not limited to weekends, holidays and after hour emergency calls;
  • Assists with fertilization, herbicide and pesticide application including mixing chemicals;
  • Assists with installation and repair of recreation, park, playground equipment and other amenities within the parks and golf course facilities;
  • May be required to instruct or train other less experience personnel;
  • May perform basic cleaning and maintenance on swimming pools, pumps, chlorinators, motors and filtering systems such as, but not limited to, vacuuming, checking chemical content, and other related activities as directed.
