Requirements

  • Working knowledge of the methods and techniques applied in unskilled manual labor and semi-skilled maintenance work.
  • Working knowledge of the standard practices, material, tools, and equipment utilized in the maintenance of buildings and of grounds.
  • Working knowledge of standard hand tools, operation of light equipment, and materials used in assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned work.
  • Some knowledge of basic horticultural, carpentry, plumbing, and custodial practices.
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member, work productively without close supervision, and respond courteously to citizens.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific oral and written instructions.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license upon hire.
  • Must obtain N.C. Pesticide Applicator’s License within one year of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduation from High school and some experience in general grounds or parks maintenance work; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Responsibilities

  • Mows grass, runs weed eaters, fertilizes and plants grass and trees; applies pesticides and herbicides, and performs other horticultural practices in the parks.
  • Prepares athletics fields for sports and team events; mows, drags, and lines ball fields.
  • Cleans parks and ball fields, picks up trash, and cleans and restocks bathrooms.
  • Performs maintenance and repair duties on recreational facilities including light carpentry, and minor electrical work; paints, repairs plumbing and performs basic masonry work; checks equipment for safety.
  • Builds and fabricates park furniture, maintains and repairs park equipment.
  • Serves as crew leader for temporary or seasonal workers.
  • Maintains cleaning and grounds equipment.
  • Maintains pesticide and herbicide records, and other inventory records.
  • Operates mowers, tractors, and various appurtenances.
  • Performs related duties as required.
