Rationale for Proposed Classification: The Maintenance Tech II classification is a progression from Maintenance Tech I, requiring advanced technical skills in facility maintenance, construction, and system repairs. This position takes on more complex responsibilities, including HVAC system maintenance and certification in aquatic facility operations, ensuring a high level of service and safety in community spaces. Summary of the Position: The Maintenance Tech II performs skilled maintenance, construction, and repair tasks on public infrastructure, parks, and aquatic facilities. This role involves more advanced work than Maintenance Tech I, requiring proficiency in structural modifications, HVAC system maintenance, and high-quality finish work. The position ensures public spaces, recreational facilities, and aquatic systems remain functional, safe, and well-maintained.

Requirements

  • Advanced understanding of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair practices for pools, splash pads, and aquatic facility systems.
  • Proficiency in HVAC system maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair.
  • Familiarity with irrigation system operations and repairs.
  • Strong awareness of workplace safety procedures and regulations.
  • Ability to perform skilled maintenance and repair work with precision.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools, power equipment, and maintenance vehicles.
  • Ability to safely operate specialized tools, heavy machinery, and maintenance vehicles.

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills to perform the job duties such as those listed above.
  • Must possess or obtain a Kansas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B with air brakes within six months of hire.
  • Ability to perform manual labor tasks in outdoor settings and various weather conditions, including lifting, bending, pulling, and operating equipment.
  • Certification as an Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO)
  • Experience in skilled maintenance work, construction, or a related field.
  • Must be a resident of Wyandotte County or willing to relocate within 12 months of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
  • All applicants for this position who do not presently hold a safety sensitive position with the Unified Government will be required to submit to a drug test after successful bid and before actual appointment.
  • This position is regulated by the US Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and is subject to all drug and alcohol testing regulations as identified in 49 CFR Part 40, as amended, and 49 CFR Part 382, as amended.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional certifications related to facility maintenance or skilled trades.
  • Experience with commercial plumbing, electrical systems, or irrigation system maintenance.
  • Backflow Inspector Certification.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all functions of a Maintenance Tech I.
  • Conduct routine maintenance and repairs on public infrastructure, including parks, facilities, and aquatic systems.
  • Troubleshoot and repair pool and splash pad equipment, including pumps, filters, and chemical feeders.
  • Assist with the installation, maintenance and repair of irrigation systems.
  • Assist with maintenance and repairs of playground equipment under the direction of certified personnel, ensuring safety and functionality.
  • Perform carpentry, plumbing, painting, masonry, HVAC and electrical work as needed.
  • Operate and maintain a variety trade-related tools, including hand tools, power equipment, and maintenance vehicles.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain organized records of inspections and repairs.
  • Perform seasonal duties, including winterization of park facilities
  • Remove trash and debris from work areas, parks and public spaces.
  • Assists with snow removal as needed.
  • Perform other responsibilities as required or assigned.
