About The Position

The Maintenance Tech III is responsible for performing advanced maintenance and repairs on public parks, buildings, and aquatic systems. This includes troubleshooting and repairing complex systems, installing and maintaining irrigation controls, and providing support for water treatment equipment in aquatics. The position involves operating specialized maintenance equipment, performing advanced repairs, and ensuring that all facilities and systems are functional and safe. The Maintenance Tech III will work independently and as part of a team to complete maintenance tasks efficiently, contributing to the upkeep of public spaces and infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Advanced understanding of carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work.
  • Advanced understanding of troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of HVAC systems.
  • Knowledge of maintenance and repair practices for pools, splash pads, and aquatic facility systems.
  • Knowledge of irrigation control systems and efficient water management practices.
  • Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety procedures and regulatory compliance.
  • Ability to perform specialized maintenance and repair work with accuracy.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, irrigation, and aquatic facilities.
  • Ability to safely operate specialized tools, heavy machinery, and maintenance vehicles.
  • Effective communication and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Effectively handle a work environment with conditions that include field and office work, exposure to dirt and dust, loud noises and vibrations, temperature extremes
  • Effectively deal with potential work hazards which may include exposure to machinery, traffic and other hazards.
  • Ability to train and provide guidance to lower-level technicians.
  • High School or G.E.D required; or any equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the duties such as those listed above.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor tasks in outdoor settings and various weather conditions, including lifting, bending, pulling, and operating equipment.
  • Aquatics Facility Operator (AFO) Certification.
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification (CPSI).
  • Valid Kansas CDL Class B with air brakes or ability to obtain within 6 months.
  • Valid Kansas driver’s license and acceptable driving record per the Unified Government’s Human Resources Driver Safety, Accident Reporting, and Vehicle Use policy throughout employment with the Unified Government.
  • Must be a resident of Wyandotte County or willing to relocate within 12 months of the date of hire.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Nice To Haves

  • Backflow Inspector Certification.
  • 5 years’ experience in facility maintenance, construction, or a related field.
  • 5 years’ experience working with pools, splash pads, or water feature maintenance.
  • Knowledge of plumbing, electrical, or irrigation systems.

Responsibilities

  • Perform all functions of Maintenance Tech I and II positions.
  • Maintain and repair irrigation control systems, ensuring proper function and water efficiency.
  • Assist with maintenance and repairs of playground equipment under the direction of certified personnel, ensuring safety and functionality.
  • Perform advanced facility maintenance and repair tasks, including carpentry, plumbing, HVAC and electrical work, in accordance with departmental guidelines.
  • Operate and maintain trade-related tools and specialized equipment.
  • Troubleshoot mechanical, plumbing, HVAC and electrical issues in public facilities.
  • Attention to detail and ability to maintain organized records of inspections and repairs.
  • Trains lower-level maintenance techs as directed.
  • Perform seasonal duties, including winterization of park facilities.
  • Remove trash and debris from work areas, parks and public spaces.
  • Assists with snow removal as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
