About The Position

This position directs and participates in manual labor, semi-skilled work in the maintenance, construction, and repair of county parks, boat ramp facilities, grounds, and equipment. Perform general park maintenance activities in all weather conditions. Performs related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general supervision of the Parks Manager and Public Works Director. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervision of other employees is not usually a responsibility of this classification, other than assigned seasonal staff and adults required to perform community service.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years of experience in park and facility maintenance, including the operation of commercial landscape equipment and mowers.
  • Valid driver’s license acceptable in the State of Oregon and an acceptable driving record.
  • Ability to attend work as scheduled and/or required, including varying shifts and weekends.
  • Ability to plan, conduct, and perform the full range of maintenance duties.
  • Ability to take direction and perform tasks with minimal supervision, understanding and following written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently or on a team that focuses on producing high-quality results.
  • Ability to read equipment instructions, maps, and blueprints.
  • Ability to identify potential occupational hazards and apply practices, policies, and procedures to the function to which assigned.
  • Ability to follow company safety procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to report hazards and unsafe behaviors.
  • Desire to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Ability to learn, apply, and follow park rules and regulations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, subordinates, other county employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of park and facility maintenance, including plant health care, turf management, general irrigation principles and pesticide application.
  • Knowledge of safe operation of park maintenance equipment such as tractors, mowers, trucks, trailers, backhoes, mini skid steer machines, chainsaws, backpack blowers, hedge trimmers, pruners, hand tools, and other associated equipment.
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic and mathematics principles.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of supervision, and training.
  • Skill in interpersonal communication.
  • Skill in use of materials and hand tools used in park maintenance and construction.
  • Skill in instructing assigned staff in safe operation of tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Constructs picnic tables, benches, fire pits, restrooms, etc.
  • Cleans Park facilities, picks up trash, cleans and stock restrooms, collects and hauls garbage, and cleans fire pits.
  • Maintains and repairs park water systems.
  • Repairs vandalized park facilities such as signs, fences, restroom fixtures, lights, benches, picnic tables, fire pits and boat docks.
  • Mows turf areas, trims bushes, shrubs, and trees; performs mower maintenance and repair.
  • Leads and coordinates the work of part-time and community service personnel in park and facilities maintenance activities.
  • Train seasonal and community service workers in the safe operation of tools and equipment.
  • Operates a variety of equipment such as trucks, trailers mowers, tractors, backpack blowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, hand tools and other associated equipment.
  • Cleans and maintains equipment and work storage areas.
  • Responds to citizen inquiries and requests.
  • Performs other related tasks as required.
  • May be required to attend monthly meetings.
