About The Position

The Presidio Trust is seeking two Seasonal Park Guides to join its Visitor Services Department. The Presidio Trust is an innovative federal agency that stewards and shares the history, beauty, and wonder of the Presidio for everyone to enjoy forever. The ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone, the Presidio was once a military post under three flags. Today, it is a surprising national park site spanning 1,500 acres at the Golden Gate. Its rare natural habits, inspiring views, and world-class trails are a local and global attraction. It is among the most biologically diverse parks in America and a popular destination with beaches, museums, restaurants, hotels, homes, and offices. Reporting to the Park Guide Supervisor, the Seasonal Park Guides serve as front-line staff supporting visitor services and the daily operations at the Presidio Tunnel Tops, including the Field Station and Outpost. Seasonal Park Guides provide orientation and information, to a high volume of visitors, with a focus on families and youth. Staff in these positions must be friendly, approachable, and knowledgeable about the Presidio. This position is focused on meeting and exceeding the expectations of visitors and is a significant contributor to an exceptional park experience. Park Guides perform routine operational tasks, assist with the facility upkeep, and support self-guided and staff-led engagement activities. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Seasonal Park Guides work full-time (32-40 hours per week) for 4-6 months, and include weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings. Our ideal candidate is an energetic, reliable team player who would thrive working in the outdoors and enjoys connecting people of all ages to nature and parks. This is a full-time temporary position with limited benefits and starting at $24.95 per hour, based in the San Francisco Bay Area. This position is included in a bargaining unit, specifically the Laborers International Union of North America, Local 792, United Public Employees of California. Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of (1) one year of customer service and/or program experience or interacting with the public including children and youth, preferably in a park or cultural institution, school, community-based organization, or other public facing organization.
  • Reliable, dependable, personable and adaptable in a fast-paced public environment.
  • Able to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse audiences.
  • Comfortable speaking to large and small groups of visitors, particularly youth and families.
  • Creative, energetic, curious, self-motivated, and passionate about sharing a love of nature, parks and outdoor experiences.
  • Skilled at taking initiative and recognizing what needs to be done.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to take direction and feedback in a constructive manner.
  • Willing to work a flexible work schedule including weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings for special programs and events (days off will be Monday & Tuesday or Tuesday and Wednesday.
  • Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather.
  • Basic proficiency with email and scheduling tools (like Microsoft Outlook).
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. short distances; stretch, grasp, kneel, twist, reach and bend

Nice To Haves

  • Bi-lingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish or ASL.
  • Coursework in parks and recreation management, environmental studies, ethnic studies, communication, education, tourism, or other related disciplines.

Responsibilities

  • Visitor Services and Public Contact Proactively and warmly welcome and orient visitors to the Field Station, Outpost, and events and activities at the Tunnel Tops.
  • Be knowledgeable about the Presidio Tunnel Tops and park features.
  • Deliver consistent, courteous and inclusive customer service to diverse audiences.
  • Respond to routine visitor questions and refer complex issues to leads or supervisory staff.
  • Punctual, reliable and maintain a neat appearance.
  • Facilities Operations & Management Assist with opening and closing procedures for the Field Station, Outpost, and other Tunnel Tops facilities.
  • Replenish materials and supplies, clean and maintain the upkeep of these facilities.
  • Identify and report maintenance or resource needs to appropriate staff.
  • Visitor Engagement Support informal self-guided learning experiences by encouraging exploration and play.
  • Staff various exhibit areas and activity spaces; modeling participation and asking open-ended questions to engage visitors.
  • Safety & Monitoring Observe visitor areas to support safe and appropriate use of facilities.
  • Report public safety concerns, incidents or unusual activity, as needed, by alerting appropriate people including designated staff and/or proper authorities.
  • Program & Team Support Work directly with and support young people hired to be play-leaders in the Outpost and Field Station.
  • Support a variety of visitor engagement activities including community events and programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
