About The Position

The Presidio Trust is seeking a Park Guide Supervisor to join its Visitor Services department. The Presidio Trust is an innovative federal agency that stewards and shares the history, beauty, and wonder of the Presidio for everyone to enjoy forever. The ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone, the Presidio was once a military post under three flags. Today, it is a surprising national park site spanning 1,500 acres at the Golden Gate. Its rare natural habits, inspiring views, and world-class trails are a local and global attraction. It is among the most biologically diverse parks in America and a popular destination with beaches, museums, restaurants, hotels, homes, and offices. Reporting to the Visitor Services Manager, the Park Guide Supervisor provides day-to-day operational support of visitor services at Presidio Tunnel Tops, including the Field Station and Outpost, which together welcome over 2 million visitors each year. The position is responsible for supervising Park Guide staff, including seasonals, and coordinating daily work activities. The Supervisor serves as a Daily Site Leader (DSL), on a rotating basis, acting as a primary on-site point of contact for visitor services and routing operational needs; monitors site conditions, responds to visitor inquiries, incidents and coordinates with internal teams to address maintenance, custodial, or safety issues, escalating more complex situations as appropriate. This public-facing role supports staff in delivering an exceptional customer service-oriented approach when interacting with the public that is consistent, professional, friendly helpful and informative. The Supervisor also supports the development of engaging place-based exhibits and experiences that spark curiosity about nature, science and the park. Requirements

  • High School diploma.
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience in visitor services, recreation, education, or public-facing operations, including at least two (2) years in a supervisory capacity leading a diverse team and directing the work of others.
  • Experience in a park or cultural institution, school, community-based organization.
  • Working knowledge of public recreation or visitor services operations, including facility use, visitor flow and basic safety practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead and support a team in a day-to-day operational setting, including assigning work, monitoring performance and providing coaching and feedback.
  • Ability to manage emergency situations with a calm demeanor.
  • Able to interact with and manage large and diverse groups and audiences; possess a friendly, outgoing, positive and enthusiastic attitude and provide clear information to staff and visitors.
  • Demonstrated skill in customer service and conflict resolution, including ability to address visitor concerns and de-escalate situations.
  • Flexible and adaptable with the ability to organize work, manage time, and adjust priorities to meet changing operational needs.
  • Willingness to work a flexible schedule including regular weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings for special programs and events, and provide coverage on short notice, as needed, when Park Guide team members are unexpectedly out of the office.
  • Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in all types of weather and conditions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and familiarity with database or scheduling systems.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 40 lbs. and perform physical tasks such as standing, walking, bending and kneeling.
  • Valid California State Drivers License.

Nice To Haves

  • A.A. or B.A. degree from an accredited college in parks and recreation management, communications, education, tourism, or other related discipline.
  • Bi-lingual in Cantonese, Mandarin, Spanish, or ASL.

Responsibilities

  • Supervision and Staffing Provide day-to-day supervision of full-time Park Guides and seasonal staff, including youth play leaders.
  • Prepare and adjust staff schedules to ensure adequate daily coverage.
  • Participate in recruitment and staff section process.
  • Address routine personnel issues, approve leave, provide ongoing feedback to support staff performance and development.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative work culture and environment.
  • Daily Site Leader Serve as a primary point of contact for visitor service and operational needs on a rotating basis.
  • Monitor site conditions across the Tunnel Tops area to support safe and efficient operations.
  • Respond to routine and moderately complex issues (e.g., visitor questions, incidents, service disruptions, etc.) and escalate situations as appropriate.
  • Coordinate with other internal teams to request maintenance, custodial, or safety support.
  • Policy Implementation and Compliance Apply and enforce established site policies, procedures and safety protocols, including visitor use guidelines and space capacity limits.
  • Facilities and Operations Support Create organizational systems and inventory of supplies and materials for efficient facilities management in support of daily operations.
  • Support daily operations of the Field Station, Outpost, and reservable spaces by carrying out opening and closing procedures.
  • Co-Curation Collaborate and oversee the development and execution of temporary and permanent exhibits and experiences in the Presidio Field Station and Outpost with key stakeholders, subject matter experts (SMEs) and content collaborators.
  • Develop and implement plans for regularly changing content.
  • Consistently review exhibits to identify necessary updates or maintenance and support the assessment and evaluation of visitor experiences.
  • Coordinate curatorial projects, including editing exhibit text and providing direct feedback on displays.
  • Customer Service Provide exceptional customer service and service-oriented approach with visitors.
  • Ensure staff deliver high-quality, consistent and welcoming information to visitors.
  • Address and resolve visitor complaints and concerns.
  • Coordination and Communication Build and maintain strong working relationships with internal teams, partner agencies and vendors to support daily operations.
  • Communicate relevant information to staff and leadership to ensure continuity of services.
  • Volunteer Support Provide day-to-day guidance to Tunnel Tops volunteers, including task direction and basic support to ensure alignment with site operations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Directly supervises a team of up to 5 full-time professionals.
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organizations policies and applicable laws.
  • Responsibilities include providing feedback, coaching, and guiding professional development of individual staff members; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; authorizing time off; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and as needed, interviewing, hiring, and training new employees.
