About The Position

The Paraprofessional (Slc) position is a non-exempt role that supports teachers with both teaching-related activities and non-teaching assignments. The primary goal is to assist teachers in their daily tasks and provide support to students. This position operates on a nine or ten-month term, with salary determined by the Paraprofessional Salary Schedule. The assignment of duties is the responsibility of the principal, adhering to Title I, Special Education, and parish guidelines. Paraprofessionals are expected to have a written, definite, and flexible schedule, reporting to work as assigned by the principal. Their workday is consistent with the school day, including breaks and scheduled in-service training. They work under the direct supervision of teachers, assisting with classroom management, instruction, and activities.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Associate degree; OR At least 48 college credit hours; OR Pass the Para-Pro Assessment

Responsibilities

  • Assist teachers with classroom management, including reading instructions, supervising lessons, reading stories, listening to oral reading, and checking seat work.
  • Relieve teachers for conferences or emergencies.
  • Assist with classroom instruction by helping absent children, supervising individualized programs, and dictating directions such as spelling.
  • Work on a one-to-one basis or with groups of children as prescribed by the teacher.
  • Assist teachers with activities by checking objective tests, studying and becoming familiar with materials, learning the use and care of audio-visual equipment, reproducing materials, and organizing and filing pertinent materials.
  • Assist with routine classroom behavior but are not responsible for student discipline.
  • Supervise children outside the classroom under the direction of a teacher or professional staff member (e.g., in the hall, during breakfast, or on the bus).
  • Understand the principles of child growth and development.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the evaluator.
