About The Position
The Paraprofessional assists educational programs serving Rochester City School District students in Grades Pre-K–6. The role involves supporting teachers and students, including student supervision and instructional assistance. The position is at John Williams School No. 5, located at 555 N. Plymouth Avenue, Rochester, NY 14608. The role reports to the School Principal or the principal’s designated administrator. Working hours vary by grade level: Pre-K positions are 32.5 hours per week, and elementary positions are 30 hours per week. Student hours are 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Toileting assistance may be required; an additional hourly stipend is provided for toileting duties. The listed salary range is $17.00–$18.30 per hour.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Working knowledge of a school environment.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to provide instructions that students can comprehend.
- Ability to work well with students, school personnel, and the public.
- Ability to maintain records.
- Patience, dependability, good judgment, and tact.
- Health commensurate with the demands of the position.
Nice To Haves
- One year of experience with children in a professional setting is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Assist with supervision of students during study hall periods.
- Supervise students for brief periods to provide teachers with unassigned time.
- Assist with supervision of students in school corridors.
- Act as a liaison between the school, home, and community agencies.
- Assist classroom teachers with proctoring or administering tests.
- Supervise students on playgrounds.
- Assist with behavior management.
- Prepare instructional support materials.
- Read stories to students.
- Collect and arrange resources for teaching.
- Assist students in performing activities initiated by the teacher.
- Assist students who missed instruction due to absence.
- Listen to students’ oral readings.
- Conduct small-group activities.
- Correct homework and workbooks.
- Assist students with writing assignments.
- Provide small-group or individual assistance with remediation and/or acceleration activities.
- Assist with student arrival and dismissal in or outside the school building.
- Provide toileting assistance when required.
