About The Position

Montgomery County Public Schools in Virginia is seeking a secondary Special Education Paraprofessional for Blacksburg High School for the 2026-2027 school year. Under the supervision of a special education teacher, the paraprofessional will support students with disabilities (ages 3-21) in accessing the general or adapted curriculum. The role aims to increase student independence and meet their educational, social, emotional, and functional needs. This may involve working with one or more students, maintaining their dignity, safety, and supervision, while promoting independence.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 48 completed college credits OR successfully completed Parapro Assessment.
  • Individuals who do not meet these qualifications will not be considered.
  • Parapro assessment can be completed with MCPS by appointment.

  • Ability to lift/transfer students from one location to another.
  • Ability to provide medical/self-care needs (e.g., hand washing, feeding, diapering).
  • Experience with technology or augmentative communication devices.

Responsibilities

  • Assists teachers in preparing instructional materials and activities to support students with disabilities.
  • Assists in providing accommodations and modifications as outlined in the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Assists students to reinforce material through special efforts and repetitions.
  • Prepares and maintains files and reports, and assists with data collection.
  • Assists teacher(s) in performing specific duties or undertaking specialized tasks.
  • Assists in providing individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to students' abilities.
  • Assists in reinforcing and maintaining student behavior standards as created and implemented by the teacher.
  • Assists the teacher in creating a conducive learning environment appropriate to student maturity and interests.
  • Supports individual or small groups of students with special needs instructionally, behaviorally, and sometimes physically to help them learn life skills.
  • Assists in maintaining the cleanliness of learning spaces (e.g., washing dishes, wiping surfaces, laundry, refilling items).
  • Assists with instructing students on the use of technology or augmentative communication devices.
  • Provides supervision in all areas of the school setting and assistance to children as necessary, pertaining to physical and behavioral needs.
  • Checks students’ work for compliance with teacher instructions, providing feedback but not doing the work for the student.
  • Assists students with content area skills (math, reading, writing, spelling, history, etc.), which may include reading aloud.
  • Demonstrates confidentiality when maintaining individual student records.
  • Helps maintain order in the classroom and monitors students to keep them on task according to behavior management plans.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
