About The Position

The Paraprofessional II – Special Education provides assistance to teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of special education students; performs classroom clerical tasks; and assists students by meeting special health care needs and developing students’ daily living and behavioral skills. This position's primary role is to provide support in the implementation of IEPs in the ELP setting.

Requirements

Selected candidates must be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.
High school diploma or a recognized equivalent
Per Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), interested applicants must be Highly Qualified to be considered for the position and have completed one of the following: completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), or obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, or satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher
The higher education institution official transcripts, or college diploma, or a copy of the Paraprofessional Assessment must be provided with your application or upon a contingent offer of employment
Effective communication skills with both children and adults, including speaking, reading, writing, and understanding English; proficiency in grammar and punctuation
Ability to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios
Ability to use basic office equipment (e.g., phone, copier, fax, etc.) and Microsoft Office

Nice To Haves

Experience in a K-12 education or public employment environment
Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

Responsibilities

Under the direction of the teacher, assist and supervise students as they attend general education classes and provide support according to their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs; utilize knowledge of student’s IEP and concepts for Special Education learning to implement learning and behavior plans that meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs
Under the guidance of the teacher, use knowledge of age-appropriate activities and stages of child development to implement classroom management techniques, provide small group instruction to students within the classroom, and provide classroom interventions and a variety of activities (e.g., constructive play, behavior modification activities, etc.), while managing time effectively
Complete safety care training
Monitor individual or small groups of students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, library, playground activities, bus boarding and exiting, etc.). Operate physical education equipment and supervise playground activities using standardized methods
Administer assessment instruments under the direction of teachers; confer with teachers to assist in evaluating student progress and implement student objectives
Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures and state law
Collect student data as related to EIP, FBA/BIP or as directed by teacher
Administer first aid and adhere to safety practices
Work under limited supervision; utilize time-management and prioritization strategies; accurately process detailed information; meet deadlines
Participate in various meetings as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions, present information to others
Communicate effectively orally and in writing with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
Perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percentages, and ratios, read a variety of manuals, and write documents following prescribed formats
Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions; work as part of a team by collaborating with own and other work units; be attentive to detail
As needed, roll, push, pull, bend, reach, stoop, and lift up to 30 pounds
Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
