About The Position

The Paraprofessional I (Early Childhood/Preschool) assists assigned teaching personnel in the supervision and instruction of students, performing classroom tasks, in support of the instructional process.

Requirements

  • Selected candidates must be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check.
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Completed at least two years at an accredited higher education institution (minimum 48 semester hours), OR obtained an associates (or higher) degree from an accredited higher education institution, OR satisfied a rigorous state or local assessment (Parapro Assessment/PRAXIS ETS) with a score of 460 or higher
  • Hold or obtain CPR, First Aid, and Utah Food Handler Certificates within 30 days of employment
  • Knowledgeable of age-appropriate activities, stages of child development, Individual Education Plans (IEP) and concepts of learning
  • Speak, read, write, analyze, understand, and follow written and verbal communication in English including grammar and punctuation; listen to, and understand information and ideas presented verbally and in writing

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in an Early Childhood setting, K-12 education, or public employment environment
  • Spanish or other language proficiency, including ability to read, write, speak, and understand

Responsibilities

  • Implement, under the supervision of assigned teacher, interventions (e.g., booster groups, individual instruction, small group instruction, etc.), lesson plans, and age-appropriate hands-on learning activities to reinforce learning concepts and improve students' learning and academic success
  • Fulfill students' learning and behavior plans to meet students' social and behavioral interventions, health care plans, and ensure compliance with IEPs
  • Provide for the individual needs of students (e.g., assistive devices, supportive technology, assistance accessing facilities, etc.) to ensure access to a quality educational program
  • Monitor individual students in a variety of settings (e.g., classroom, library, playground activities, field trip, bus boarding and exiting, etc.) providing a safe and positive learning environment
  • Assist teachers in evaluating student progress and implementing student objectives
  • Prepare teaching materials, perform record-keeping and clerical functions, and organize related reports (e.g., worksheets, scheduling, copying, data recording, grades, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) to implement lesson plans and document student progress to support the teacher and administrator
  • Administer first aid/CPR to students when necessary and adhere to safety practices
  • Report incidents (e.g., fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students and adhere to district policies, procedures and state law
  • Interact with families (e.g., make phone calls, attend parent-teacher conferences, welcome parents to the classroom, etc.) to relay information on student progress and encourage parental involvement
  • Assist other school personnel as required and needed (e.g., instructors, site administration, other paraprofessionals, etc.) to ensure an efficient and effective learning environment
  • Participate in various meetings and workshops as assigned to convey and gather information required to perform functions; present information to others; attend additional training opportunities as needed
  • Support a team environment by collaborating with own and other work units to effectively perform duties
  • Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively
  • Communicate effectively with diverse individuals and groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and building positive working relationships with employees and stakeholders
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
