About The Position

The Utah Schools for the Deaf and the Blind (USDB) is seeking four caring and motivated individuals to fill the position of Paraprofessional for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing at the Jean Massieu School for the Deaf in Salt Lake City. This role involves assisting a classroom instructor in working with deaf/hard of hearing students, who may have additional disabilities. Requirements

  • Practical knowledge of basic classroom techniques and organization.
  • American Sign Language (ASL) skills required for assignments in ASL classrooms.
  • Techniques for assisting and providing effective support to classroom instructors.
  • Practical skills in working effectively with students.
  • Safe and timely response to special classroom situations.
  • Ability to follow written and/or verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
  • Ability to enter, transcribe, record, store, or maintain information in either written or electronic form.
  • Ability to deal with people in a manner that shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to drive a state vehicle is required.
  • Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience working with disabled children.
  • MANDT training.
  • A valid Utah Driver License.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare teaching materials and tutor individual students under the supervision of the instructor.
  • Communicate the progress of the students to the instructor.
  • Perform duties related to the motivation and achievement of students in academic and skills areas.
  • Assist with behavior interventions under the direction of the instructor.
  • Assist with routine daily activities, such as bus duty, recess, lunch, and bathroom (may include diapering).
  • Provide support in a classroom environment by working directly with teachers and students.
  • Maintain accurate records and logs.
  • Design and/or prepare training/instructional materials, teaching aids, and devices.
