About The Position

Under the general supervision of the Calumet County Director of Special Education, assists the teacher in creating an educational program and classroom environment resulting in high levels of learning and personal growth of each student that will contribute to their intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development, with the philosophy and goals of the district. This role involves supporting instruction, ensuring a safe and stimulating educational environment, and providing specialized assistance to students as needed.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or GED required.
  • One to two years of experience working with school-aged children.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to speak effectively with students, parents, county employees, and district school leaders.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Knowledge of word processing software and the ability to perform a full scope of word processing functions independently and with a high degree of accuracy and speed.
  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction certification, as needed.
  • Valid WI driver's license.
  • Knowledge of office procedures, general office equipment, and of the operation of equipment and teaching aides utilized in the classroom.
  • Ability to learn departmental programs, operations, and policies with respect to general functions performed.
  • Ability to perform a variety of complex clerical tasks.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective public and working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently and with others in a team environment.
  • Ability to observe, assess, and accurately report the behavior of others.
  • Ability to be patient and remain calm in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work in an environment with frequent interruptions.

Responsibilities

  • Supports instruction to all students reinforcing the certified teacher’s lessons.
  • Provides support to the teacher to ensure a safe and stimulating educational environment.
  • Assists the teacher in planning and preparation for daily activities.
  • Aids instructional efforts of the teacher.
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts.
  • Plans and administers remedial lessons per certified teacher’s direction.
  • Provides specialized attendant services as required by the student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and as directed by the teacher.
  • Performs administrative support and assistance for teaching staff.
  • Prepares documents and correspondence including typing letters, memos, schedules, notices, tracking data and other miscellaneous items; photocopies documents; maintains files; and distributes items, as needed.
  • Assists the teacher and administration in implementing policies and rules governing student conduct.
  • Provides supervision of students as directed by the teacher and/or the principal.
  • Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Organizes the physical environment to ensure that the classroom is safe and supports the learning of all students.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information.
  • Develops and maintains trust and positive relationships with parents, students, and staff members.
  • Serves as a positive role model for students in how to conduct themselves as citizens and as responsible, intelligent human beings.
  • Helps instill in students the belief in and practice of ethical principles and democratic values.
  • Participates in in-service training and programs as assigned.
  • Performs any other professional duties as assigned by the classroom teacher, director of special education, principal, district administrator, or designee.
  • May transport students in district-owned vehicles when requested.
  • Supervises students and provides appropriate redirection in accordance with policy and procedures.
  • Formal discipline will be administered to students with support from the teaching and/or administrative staff.
