About The Position

The Bilingual Paraprofessional provides native language instructional supports to English language learners (ELLs) under the direct guidance of the classroom teacher and ERT (ESOL Resource Teacher). The Bilingual Paraprofessional also provides native language supports to the parents and families of English language learners, including parent involvement and community outreach activities. Responsibilities also include assisting with or as needed, administering the testing, identification, and annual reevaluation of ELLs, including completion of the related documentation. The Bilingual Paraprofessional also supports the full-time equivalency (FTE) collection process and all monitoring/auditing conducted by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE) and/or the United States Department of Education (USDOE). Requirements

  • One (1) year of increasingly responsible experience in education, childcare, or related field.
  • Must meet one of the following criteria: · Associate degree or higher (Q-NCLB-A), · Completed 60 semester hours or two (2) years of study at an institution of higher education (Q-NCLB-B), or · Passed the ParaPro Test with a score of 457 or higher (Q-NCLB-C).
  • Must demonstrate the ability to fluently speak, read, and write English and a language other than English by receiving a passing score on the Bilingual Paraprofessional language screening administered by the ELL department.
  • Reads and comprehends simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Writes simple correspondence.
  • Effectively presents information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Adds and subtracts two-digit numbers and multiplies and divides with 10s and 100s. Performs these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.
  • Applies understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Deals with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Knowledge of relevant and current computer software programs.
  • Basic computer skills preferred.
  • Basic understanding of child development and instructional processes.

Responsibilities

  • Under the guidance of a certified teacher, uses English and the heritage language to support ELLs in acquiring English and mastering the grade level standards.
  • Assists in administering individual and group assessments.
  • Translates and interprets basic home/school communications to parents and families.
  • Acquaints parents with available personnel and services.
  • Assists with the preparation, completion, and maintenance of all required program records.
  • Assists students and families with the enrollment process.
  • Works closely with school and district personnel in the establishment of the ELL Parent Advisory Council (PAC) and the ELL District Advisory Council (DAC).
  • Assists teachers in understanding the linguistic needs and cultural backgrounds of English language learners.
  • Participates in professional development related to delivering linguistic and academic support to ELLs and the maintenance and monitoring of program records.
  • Maintains confidentiality regarding all school matters.
  • Follows all attendance and punctuality requirements and is professional in dress and personal grooming.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
