About The Position

Paramedics demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations and possess the knowledge and the necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting. They administer emergency care and treatment, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, and establish priority for required emergency care. Paramedics provide advanced medical care to patients, requiring complex knowledge and skills for patient care and transportation. They may assist and give direction to additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders at the scene and/or during transport. Paramedics provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children, including medical and trauma patients. They determine the appropriate facility for patient transport based on their assessment of the patient's condition and injuries, unless otherwise directed. While en route to the facility, they constantly assess the patient, administering additional care as indicated or directed. Paramedics may use equipment within the medical transport environment. They observe, record, and report the patient's condition, treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment to physicians and receiving facility staff for records and diagnostics. Paramedics maintain communication with the receiving facility for medical direction and to provide patient status and critical information. They complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment, understanding all applicable legal, moral, and ethical issues surrounding emergency medical services. Paramedics maintain communication with the patient and family, offering comfort and reassurance while demonstrating concern and courtesy, and maintaining patient confidentiality. They may assist with patient care in the receiving facility, including lifting and moving patients as required. Additionally, they provide a welcoming and educational environment for students and complete academic assessments promptly.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Thorough knowledge of paramedic principles, practices and techniques.
Knowledge of how various equipment, such as a monitor or defibrillator, work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
Depending on location, holds national registry status at a Paramedic level.
Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license.
If working in Minnesota, an Advanced RN-EMT certification is accepted.
Additional licensures as required depending upon state.
Paramedic (PAR) Certification.
National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS)100, 200, 700, and 800 completed.
Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
Depending on location, must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

Associates Degree in Paramedic Technology or Paramedicine preferred.
Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent, advanced version for paramedics.
International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred depending on location.

Responsibilities

Administer emergency care and treatment.
Determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establish priority for required emergency care.
Provide advanced medical care to patients.
Assist and give direction to additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders.
Provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children, medical and trauma patients.
Determine the appropriate facility for patient transport.
Constantly assess the patient while in route to the emergency facility, administering additional care as indicated or given by medical direction.
Use equipment included in the medical transport environments.
Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment.
Demonstrate good communication with the receiving facility to get medical direction and to provide patient's status and other critical information.
Complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided.
Understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding the emergency medical service.
Maintain communication with the patient and the family, comforts and reassures patients and be able to demonstrate concern and courtesy while maintaining confidentiality of the patient's information.
Assist with patient care in the receiving facility; lifting and moving patients as required.
Provide welcoming and educational environment for students and complete any academic assessments in a timely fashion.
Attend training classes to maintain national certification, state licensure, and keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
Perform EKGs and cardiac monitoring.
Assist with patient triage.
Perform and maintain IV therapy.
Perform respiratory management and therapy.
Perform orthopedic splinting.
Perform basic wound management.
Perform any other skills and assessments as directed by the attending physicians.
Perform all hospital approved skills and procedures under the direction of the attending physician within their scope of practice.
