About The Position

Under the direction and guidance of the Emergency Department Medical Director, and the general supervision of the Emergency Department Nursing Director, and in accordance with the standards of care and practice referenced by St. Joseph Hospital’s unit/departmental policies and procedures, the paramedic performs various functions. The primary responsibility for an individual patient will remain with the assigned RN. This role involves performing standard assessments, identifying patient care priorities, reassessing patient status, and reporting changes to the appropriate RN or ED physician. Responsibilities include initiating and maintaining IV and IO access lines, performing blood draws, removing lines, obtaining and interpreting EKGs, recognizing and reporting abnormal cardiac rhythms, performing endotracheal intubation as requested by the ED Physician, obtaining and evaluating FSBG, wound dressing application, obtaining clean catch urine, transporting patients, administering medications, setting up suture sets, splint application, order entry, and restocking supplies. The role also includes triaging and discharging patients, maintaining confidentiality, communicating verbally and in writing, documenting in the electronic medical record, serving as a patient advocate, monitoring department cleanliness and safety, ensuring patient comfort, collaborating with the ED Team, paying attention to patient needs, interacting positively with team members, respecting patient culture, lifestyle, religion, and age, and accepting constructive criticism.

Requirements

  • Current New Hampshire Paramedic license required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required.
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support required.
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support certification required.
  • Point of care competencies (urine dip, glucose monitoring, fecal occult)

Nice To Haves

Responsibilities

  • Perform standard assessments using basic and complex equipment
  • Based on assessments, identify patient care priorities
  • Reassess patient status/needs at appropriate intervals
  • Report patient status changes/needs to appropriate RN or ED physician/treating clinician
  • Initiate/maintain IV access lines in ED and other patient areas, excluding central lines
  • Initiate/maintain intraosseous (IO) access lines with physician approval
  • Perform blood draws and send to lab according to policy
  • Removal of IV/IO lines
  • Obtain and interpret 12 lead EKG and present to ordering provider
  • Recognize and report abnormal cardiac rhythms to treating provider
  • Perform Endotracheal intubation as requested by the ED Physician
  • Obtain and evaluate FSBG
  • Wound dressing application
