About The Position

Paramedics at Sanford Health demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations, possessing the knowledge and skills to provide lifesaving interventions in pre-hospital settings. They administer emergency care and treatment, determine the nature and extent of illness or injury, and establish priorities for required emergency care. This role involves providing advanced medical care, patient assessment, and transportation, often assisting and directing other EMS Responders. Paramedics provide emergency care to adults, infants, and children, for both medical and trauma patients, determining appropriate transport facilities and continuously assessing patients en route. They administer additional care as directed by medical supervision, utilize medical transport equipment, and meticulously observe, record, and report patient conditions, treatments, and reactions to physicians and receiving facility staff. Strong communication with receiving facilities is crucial for medical direction and patient status updates. The role requires extensive written documentation, understanding of legal, moral, and ethical issues in emergency medical services, and maintaining patient confidentiality while providing comfort and reassurance. Paramedics also assist with patient care, lifting, and moving patients in receiving facilities, and contribute to a welcoming and educational environment for students, completing academic assessments. Continuous training is required to maintain national certification, state licensure, and stay updated on field developments. If assigned to an emergency department, paramedics collaborate with the nursing team under the attending physician's direction, performing tasks such as EKGs, cardiac monitoring, patient triage, IV therapy, respiratory management, orthopedic splinting, basic wound management, and other hospital-approved skills within their scope of practice.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Thorough knowledge of paramedic principles, practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of how various equipment, such as a monitor or defibrillator, work and how to troubleshoot problems that may arise.
  • Hold national registry status at a Paramedic level.
  • Additional training provided/workshops and staff meetings are to be attended as per policy.
  • Depending on state requirements, individuals may need to have a state license.
  • If working in Minnesota, an Advanced RN-EMT certification is accepted.
  • Additional licensures as required depending upon state; Paramedic (PAR) Certification.
  • National Incident Management Systems (NIMS) Incident Command System (ICS)100, 200, 700, and 800 completed.
  • Continued education hour's as mandated by accreditation.
  • Must possess a valid Driver's License and have a good driving record.

Nice To Haves

  • Associates Degree in Paramedic Technology or Paramedicine preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS).
  • Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or equivalent, advanced version for paramedics.
  • International Trauma Life Support (ITLS).
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) preferred depending on location.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate competency in trauma and medical situations and possess the knowledge and the necessary skills to provide lifesaving interventions in a pre-hospital setting.
  • Administer emergency care and treatment and determine the nature and extent of illness or injury and establishes priority for required emergency care.
  • Provide advanced medical care to patients.
  • Provide patient care and transportation.
  • Assist and give direction to additional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Responders at the scene and/or during transport.
  • Provide emergency care to adults, infants and children, medical and trauma patients, based on their assessment.
  • Determine the appropriate facility that patients should be transported to based on their knowledge of the condition of the patients and the extent of their injuries unless otherwise indicated by medical direction.
  • Constantly assess the patient while in route to the emergency facility, administers additional care as indicated or given by medical direction.
  • Use equipment included in the medical transport environments.
  • Observe, record, and report to physician the patient's condition or injury, the treatment provided, and reactions to drugs or treatment at the emergency scene and in transit to the receiving facility staff for purposes of records and diagnostics.
  • Demonstrate good communication with the receiving facility to get medical direction and to provide patient's status and other critical information.
  • Complete extensive written documentation on patient condition and treatment provided.
  • Understand all applicable legal, moral and ethical issues surrounding the emergency medical service.
  • Maintain communication with the patient and the family, comforts and reassures patients and be able to demonstrate concern and courtesy while maintaining confidentiality of the patient's information.
  • Assist with patient care in the receiving facility; lifting and moving patients as required.
  • Provide welcoming and educational environment for students and complete any academic assessments in a timely fashion.
  • Attend training classes to maintain national certification, state licensure, and keep abreast of new developments in the field, or maintain existing knowledge.
  • Work collaboratively with nursing team under the direction & supervision of the attending physician (if hired into an emergency department).
  • Perform EKGs and cardiac monitoring (if in emergency department).
  • Assist with patient triage (if in emergency department).
  • Perform and maintain IV therapy (if in emergency department).
  • Respiratory management and therapy (if in emergency department).
  • Orthopedic splinting (if in emergency department).
  • Basic wound management (if in emergency department).
  • Perform any other skills and assessments as directed by the attending physicians (if in emergency department).
  • Perform all hospital approved skills and procedures under the direction of the attending physician within their scope of practice (if in emergency department).
