About The Position

This role provides pre-hospital advanced life support care from initial contact until patient care is relinquished to the accepting medical facility, maintaining thorough patient care documentation in a timely manner. The Paramedic practices within their scope of practice as defined by the State of Illinois/Wisconsin and Mercyhealth, maintaining competency through ongoing laboratory and clinical experiences. They communicate educational needs to program leadership, provide patient care as assigned according to standards of care, and perform advanced skills and procedures approved by Mercyhealth. Responsibilities include maintaining documentation of required licensure, certifications, continuing education, and safety training, as well as attending educational programs as required by the medical director. This role serves as a role model, educator, and clinical resource, participating in departmental activities, simulation, projects, and committees, including research and publishing opportunities. The Paramedic maintains awareness of current issues in pre-hospital care through professional activities and acts as a preceptor and/or participates in onboarding new partners and students. They are knowledgeable in the use and maintenance of all equipment and supplies, responsible for reporting medical equipment failures, and maintaining adequate supplies within transport vehicles. The role also involves assisting with the routine maintenance of the ambulance, equipment, and facilities to ensure a clean, orderly, and professional appearance for rapid response. Functions include serving as a medical flight member, attending pre-mission and post-mission briefings, completing necessary documentation, assisting with pre-mission liftoff checklists, and assisting the pilot as requested. Safety compliance is crucial for self, medical personnel, patients, and equipment, including conducting aircraft safety briefings as needed. Additionally, the Paramedic functions as a CCTT ground team member, attending pre-call and post-call briefings, assisting with pre-call activities, and conducting safety briefings. They participate in Mercyhealth meetings, activities, projects, and committees, including patient and referring institution follow-up and outreach marketing/education. Maintaining a clean work and patient environment, processing orders accurately and timely, answering phones and call lights, and managing supplies (scanning, stocking, ordering, disposing of expired items) are also key duties. Specific medical procedures include venipuncture, IV access, 12-lead acquisition, blood glucose analysis, and CPR. The role serves as a resource to neonatal/pediatric partners and floats to outlying Mercyhealth facilities as needed. Other duties include directing visitors and maintaining medical records and patient charges. The role involves potential supervisory responsibilities when assigned as Crew Chief.

Requirements

  • Excellent communication skills and customer service skills.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and at least three years’ related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum three (3) years’ (minimum of 4000 hours) recent experience in a busy 911 system an ALS experience.
  • National Registry Certificate required
  • Paramedic license in the State of practice is required.
  • Dual State of Illinois and Wisconsin licensure required within 90 days.
  • Current AHA BLS/CPR required
  • EVOC Driving course completion within (3) months of hire.
  • NIMS Training IS 100, 200, and Hazmat within 90 days.
  • For those driving Mercyhealth vehicles: Maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Have and maintain an acceptable driving record per Mercyhealth's HR.100 Fleet and Driver Safety policy.
  • For those driving their personal vehicles: Maintain a valid driver's license and reliable transportation with proof of vehicle insurance when requested.
  • Have and maintain an acceptable driving record per Mercyhealth's HR.100 Fleet and Driver Safety policy.
  • Passing the Driver’s License Check and/or Credit Check (for those positions requiring).
  • Passing the WI Caregiver Background Check and/or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.
  • Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Suite, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook

Nice To Haves

  • Current Certification of AHA ACLS and PALS required within 90 days.
  • Resuscitation Program (NRP) Certification required within (3) three months of hire.
  • National Institute Healthcare Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required within (1) one year of hire.
  • Pre Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) or International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) within (9) nine months of hire date.
  • Trauma Nurse Core Curriculum (TNCC) attendance required within (1) year of hire.
  • Specialty certification: FP-C required within two (2) years of hire
  • Certified American Heart Association Instructor in at least one level (BLS, ACLS, PALS), within (2) two years of hire

Responsibilities

  • Acts as a preceptor and/or participates in on-boarding/orientation of new partners and students.
  • Clearly communicates program goals and objectives.
  • Knowledgeable in use and routine maintenance of all equipment and supplies used by Mercyhealth.

  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
  • When functioning in the ambulance, acts in a supervisory position when assigned as Crew Chief of the ambulance as outlined with the respective roles and responsibilities of the position.
