About The Position

This role involves providing emergency medical services and firefighting support. The Paramedic Probationary will work under the supervision of a fire station Lieutenant and an on-duty EMS Lieutenant. Responsibilities include assessing patients, administering medical treatment, determining transport needs, communicating with hospital personnel, and operating emergency vehicles. Additionally, the role involves firefighting duties such as responding to alarms, donning protective gear, searching for victims, extricating individuals, carrying victims, connecting hoses, advancing hose lines, identifying hazardous materials, using ladders, extinguishing fires in hazardous conditions, opening structures, and preserving evidence of arson. Maintaining up-to-date knowledge of firefighting procedures and paramedic license is crucial. The role also includes cleaning and inspecting equipment.

Requirements

  • Valid Paramedic license.
  • Ability to work under assigned Lieutenants.
  • Knowledge of established firefighting procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Gather medical information from patients and bystanders.
  • Check patient's pulse and respiration.
  • Administer medical treatment based on patient's condition and protocols.
  • Determine appropriate patient transport method (ambulance or wing).
  • Communicate patient condition and treatment to hospital medical personnel.
  • Load and unload patients into/from ambulances.
  • Drive emergency ambulances safely to transport patients.
  • Respond to alarms and radio messages.
  • Don protective equipment (air pack, turnouts, gloves).
  • Search for victims in smoky areas and identify safe evacuation routes.
  • Use specialized equipment (e.g., jaws-of-life) for extrication.
  • Carry victims down ladders or stairs.
  • Connect hoses and advance charged hose lines to fight fires.
  • Identify flammable or hazardous materials.
  • Operate and maneuver ladders.
  • Extinguish fires in low visibility and high heat environments.
  • Open holes in structures using equipment.
  • Preserve evidence of arson.
  • Maintain knowledge of firefighting procedures.
  • Maintain paramedic license.
  • Clean and inspect equipment.
