About The Position

Provides high quality, individualized, family centered care to pediatric patients in the transport environment. Care and transport of the acutely ill or injured patient is supported through the use of the Paramedic scope of practice in accordance with the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Systems (CAMTS) standards and hospital policies and procedures. Varied schedules to include weekend and holiday patterns.

Requirements

  • Completion of a Paramedic Program Required
  • Minimum 1 year of ALS experience as a Paramedic Required
  • Paramedic current and valid in the State of Nebraska Required
  • National Registry Paramedic Required
  • Basic Life Support from the American Heart Association Required
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support Required
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program within 120 Days Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support Required
  • The S.T.A.B.L.E Program (STABLE) within 180 Days Required
  • Pediatric Advanced Transport Course (PATC) within 1 Year Required or Pre-Hospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) within 1 Year Required
  • Must have valid driver’s license with an acceptable motor vehicle driving record Upon Hire Required
  • Completed and passed the Certified Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (CEVO) or Emergency Vehicle Operator course (EVOC) Required
  • Must be compliant with "fit for duty" policy with the exception of the weight limit.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Critical Care Paramedic program Preferred
  • Minimum 1 year of experience with pediatric patients Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Conducts individualized age-specific patient/family assessments according to defined paramedic standards, or protocols.
  • Assesses patient/family need for education and uses an individualized approach in delivery style.
  • Assess and interprets patient data upon arrival at the referring hospital.
  • Performs reassessment based on unit standards, protocols and changes in patient condition.
  • Communicates changes to appropriate persons (transport partner, MCP, family) as indicated.
  • Performs reassessments on transports after interventions and as needed.
  • Communicates changes to transport partner, or medical control physician (MCP).
  • Provides safe driving of the ambulance according to the Standards of the US Department of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and EMS National Standards.
  • Utilizes lights and sirens as per Children’s Policy adhering to standard safety practices.
  • Maintains Response Times within targeted benchmarks set by the program.
  • Complies with ambulance operational safety in accordance with current guidelines.
  • Checks, cleans, and stocks transport bags and equipment.
  • Ensures equipment is in good working order.
  • Maintains all transport equipment in a state of mission readiness by checking all equipment at the beginning of each shift, noting any discrepancies and ensuring steps toward resolution.
  • Cleans equipment and restocks bags after a transport.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of transport equipment location, function and restocking procedures.
  • Demonstrates the ability to troubleshoot all equipment and ensures that all malfunctions are promptly reported.
  • Completes daily, weekly, monthly and ongoing equipment checklists.
  • Completes quarterly competencies, monthly education, and other educational and professional development requirements when assigned.
  • Develops individualized patient/family plan of care using evidence-based treatment orders to meet identified needs.
  • Utilizes assessment data from the referral hospital or team as well as transport assessment data to individualize patient care and transport needs.
  • Utilizes individualized assessment data to develop the patient/family’s plan of care.
  • Revises plan of care based on patient’s condition and transport conditions (weather, distance, mode.)
  • Demonstrates ability to prioritize patient interventions based on assessments/reassessments.
  • While on transport, develops and initiates a plan of care incorporating current and potential problems requiring intervention, expected response and the medical plan of care in collaboration with transport partner, and/or the MCP.
  • Communicates the plan to the receiving nurse prior to arrival at Children’s Hospital or receiving facility.
  • Incorporates critical thinking into the delivery of clinical skills and in analyzing patient response to orders, tests, labs, medications, and treatments.
  • Demonstrates clinical competence in administering interventions according to identified standards and age specific needs.
  • During the transport process, prioritizes and organizes care based on patient acuity, time limitations and consultation with transport partner and/or medical control physician.
  • Initiates action to prevent current or potential risk to a patient in an emergency situation.
  • Documentation reflects accurate assessment/evaluation, modification, and patients response to therapy, changes in condition, and therapeutic interventions/procedures.
  • Entries into in the electronic medical record follow transport documentation policy.
  • Documentation is completed within established timeframes.
  • Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
