About The Position

Indiana Legal Services, Inc. (ILS) is a statewide, not-for-profit organization that provides free legal services to eligible clients in civil cases through eight regional offices. This position is located in the Indianapolis Regional Office and is a Full-time Paralegal role. The Paralegal will work as part of the Central Indiana Medical-Legal Partnership Project. The primary role of the Paralegal is to interview potential clients for legal services, conducted by telephone and at on-site outreach locations. The Paralegal will also provide paralegal support to the MLP project attorneys in a variety of civil cases, including family law, public benefits, landlord-tenant, and consumer law cases by drafting pleadings, correspondence, and other paralegal and clerical tasks.

Requirements

  • Dedicated to the mission of Indiana Legal Services and the medical-legal partnership.
  • Interested in helping low-income individuals and families with their legal needs.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook and able to quickly learn new software.
  • Excellent typing skills are required.
  • Sensitivity to applicants and clients from many different backgrounds and experiences, including clients with health conditions.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Have excellent case, task, and time management skills.
  • Have reliable transportation.

Nice To Haves

  • Spanish language fluency preferred.
  • Experience drafting legal correspondence and legal pleadings preferred.
  • College degree, paralegal certification, and/or experience working in a law office is preferred.
  • Experience with intake or outreach preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Draft pleadings and correspondence under the supervision of an attorney.
  • Conduct potential client intake in-house and off-site.
  • Conduct legal research.
  • Assist attorneys as requested with case handling, client contact and general support, including clerical and administrative tasks.
  • Serve as primary case handler on specific cases, where appropriate, working under supervision of an attorney.
  • Participate in and support the team’s Case Acceptance Meetings and processes.
  • Conduct outreach and assist with community education and clinics.
  • Assist with developing and maintaining community partnerships and collaborations.
  • Assist with grant and other reporting and compliance requirements.
