About The Position

The Public Defender of Indiana has an opening for a full-time (37.5 hours/week) paralegal. The office provides legal representation to indigent incarcerated men, women, and children in state court post-conviction proceedings.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of legal procedures and terminology
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple tasks comfortably
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including interaction with coworkers, outside agencies, and court staff
  • A proven record of dependability, initiative, and responsibility
  • Familiarity with legal proceedings and electronic court filing systems
  • Excellent analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving abilities
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Proficiency in computer applications, including Microsoft Word, Excel, case management systems, and legal databases
  • Ability to handle sensitive documents and information with confidentiality
  • Strong time-management skills and the ability to meet deadlines
  • Capacity to work independently
  • Commitment to providing professional customer service to both internal and external stakeholders
  • Able to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Nice To Haves

  • A bachelor’s degree or Paralegal Certificate is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provides administrative support to a pool of attorneys.
  • Assisting with the preparation and filing of trial and appellate pleadings.
  • Ordering documents and other records.
  • Client case file maintenance and organization.
  • Calendaring hearings and pleading deadlines.
  • Frequent interaction with court agencies and the Department of Correction.
  • Scheduling client conferences; and other tasks as needed.
