About The Position

This is a dually allocated entry-level para-professional work in support of major legal activity within the County government. Incumbents perform a variety of tasks related to client needs under the general direction and support of more senior paralegals, law clerks and practicing attorneys. Incumbents assist with various legal assignments including but not limited to: preparing legal correspondence and documents, performing legal and factual research, conducting interviews, and performing other related legal support work. A significant aspect of this work involves working effectively and tactfully with people from all socio-economic backgrounds. Work is performed according to established procedures. Incumbents use judgment to recognize circumstances requiring further clarification or information.

Requirements

  • Associate of Arts Degree in social science or paralegal studies at an accredited college or university or Two (2) years of experience in performing paralegal/legal assistant work.
  • Any equivalent combination of relevant training, education and experience may also be considered.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of general law, legal procedures and terminology; familiarity with statutes affecting the work of the agency.
  • Knowledge of courts and judicial proceedings.
  • Ability to perform administrative details, including researching composing legal documents, letters and memoranda.
  • Fluency in languages other than English.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in drafting pleadings, legal documents and associated memoranda in connection with activities related such programs to child support, condemnation, foreclosure, surety bonds, guardianship, child custody, code enforcement, forfeiture, collection, personal property tax, tax liens and similar areas.
  • Assists in the preparation and filing of complaints, pleadings, wage withholdings, rules to show cause, consents, correspondence, legal memoranda, financial and status reports and other related legal documents in various State and District Courts.
  • Maintains legal files, accounts, records, and tickler systems.
  • Learns to operate and extract information from research computers; performs basic manual and automated legal research.
  • Assists in conducting interviews to elicit information.
  • Assists in screening requests from citizens to determine eligibility for legal assistance and explains various legal procedures, laws, ordinances and office/government/court functions.
  • Checks court dockets and keeps attorney's clients and others advised as to the status of cases.
  • Assists in identifying essential witnesses and prepares summonses in a timely manner.
  • Reviews and analyzes information on case documents; alerts attorneys to any discrepancies or areas requiring special attention and determines court jurisdiction.
  • Assists in preparing worksheets and summarizing cases from source documents information.
  • Determines what reports, records, or other documents are needed for evidence in court proceedings; compiles and organizes documents to be used for evidence.
  • Performs tasks and duties which may not be specifically listed in the class specification or position description willingly and cooperatively, but which are within the general occupational category and responsibility level typically associated with the employee's class of work.
