About The Position

Washington County is seeking a Paralegal to join the District Attorney's Office on the Domestic Violence Team. This role involves legal research, compiling evidence and information for criminal proceedings, and managing case files and digital evidence. The Paralegal will assist deputy district attorneys in case development and organization, prepare legal documents, and manage exhibits and documents for court proceedings. Bilingual candidates who are fluent in Spanish are encouraged to apply, as additional compensation is provided for bilingual positions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in legal studies or a related field from an accredited institution, or the completion of a comprehensive formal paralegal program.
  • Two (2) years of professional legal support experience, including legal research, case preparation support for prosecutors, trial preparation, or related experience.
  • Knowledge of criminal legal procedures and rules in the state court system.
  • Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for conducting legal research.
  • Knowledge of Word processing systems, filing and records management systems, as well as office software applications used in legal offices.
  • Skill to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Skill to use logic and reasoning to identify alternative solutions or approaches to problems.
  • Skill to prepare legal documents and trial forms typical of court proceedings.
  • Ability to communicate statements of law, fact, and arguments clearly and logically in written and oral form.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work to meet established deadlines.
  • Ability to conduct legal research, compile data, and produce reports.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Completion of a Paralegal Program approved by the American Bar Association.
  • Experience performing paralegal work in the area of criminal prosecution.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Knowledge of the Spanish language, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Skill in writing Spanish accurately.
  • Ability to speak Spanish fluently.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing in Spanish.

Responsibilities

  • Assists a team of deputy district attorneys in the development and organization of their cases.
  • Conducts legal research and writing for relevant issues.
  • Organizes case files and digital evidence.
  • Provides summaries and compiled data and reports to aid the deputy district attorneys to complete their case reviews and prepare for court.
  • Uses legal and organizational knowledge to manage and control exhibits and documents associated with court proceedings and cases.
