About The Position

A Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance is required for this position. The Paralegal IV will provide Professional Litigation Support Services, including performing legal research, records research, witness interviews, title reviews, preparation of reports, and research and response to landowner complaints.

Requirements

  • A Public Trust clearance or ability to obtain a Public Trust clearance is required.
  • 2-year degree or higher, or High School diploma and paralegal certificate.
  • Requires paralegal certificate. An equivalent level of legal training may be substituted with the approval of the CO; undergraduate degree preferred.
  • At least one year of litigation paralegal experience preferred; trial experience very helpful.
  • Three years of experience in legal support.
  • Ability to use, understand, and maintain directories, personnel lists, and other guides and references to provide a variety of information on the office and refer questions to other offices.
  • Skill in meeting and dealing with people in a courteous and tactful manner.
  • Skilled in operating a computer terminal, personal computer, various office machines (fax, scanner, copier, etc).
  • Hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, database, spreadsheet, and telecommunications.
  • Ability to deliver the highest quality work under pressure.
  • Basic legal knowledge, including knowledge of standard legal citation to cite check legal motions and memorandum.
  • Must have sufficient experience with legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw to perform basic legal research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Thorough knowledge and hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including: word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
  • Basic familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of e-discovery procedures and resources.
  • Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Must be able to pass a Minimum Background Investigation prior to starting work on site and receive favorable adjudication of the appropriate Department of Justice background investigation consistent with a position sensitivity level 5, which requires the completion of an SF 85P/S, Questionnaire/s for Public Trust Position.
  • Must pass pre-employment qualifications of Cherokee Federal.

Responsibilities

  • Provide professional litigation support services including performing legal and records research, witness interviews, title reviews, preparation of reports, research and response to landowner complaints, courtroom assistance/trial preparation, and monthly reports.
  • Conduct witness interviews and prepare a record of the interviews for use at deposition. Contractor employees shall identify themselves as a contracted employee during phone and face-to-face interviews with landowners.
  • Review title commitments for accuracy and create a deed history summary.
  • Support and assist attorneys in the courtroom by preparing exhibit cross-references, and screening documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
  • Identify types of record keeping systems and types of records maintained that would be relevant. Gather, sort, and interpret data from various record systems, including computer information systems.
  • Develop statistics and tabulations, such as standard deviations, regression analyses, and weighting, to provide leads and supportive data for case litigation. Prepare charts, graphs, and tables to illustrate results.
  • Analyze data, develop recommendations and justifications for the attorney(s) who will take the matter to court.
  • Design and develop systems and procedures for tracking, controlling, and managing case files, exhibits, and other case-specific materials.
  • Prepare Declarations of Taking Reports, Amended Declarations of Taking (ADT) Reports, Complaints, Notices Joint Motions to Close, and Motions to Suppress.
  • Summarize depositions and other transcripts.
  • Maintain case files, control exhibits, and other materials at depositions and at trial for assigned cases.
  • Document landowner complaints and responses in a monthly report.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
