This position is within the North Carolina Department of Justice/Attorney General’s Office (DOJ), Transportation Division, which represents the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT) in its litigation and legal matters, including eminent domain/condemnation actions, employment actions and contract matters. The Paralegal II serves as litigation and legal support to attorneys in the Transportation Division of NCDOJ. The work is primarily in the Condemnation Section of the Transportation Division working on litigation related to eminent domain/condemnation actions. The Paralegal II in this position prepares and files documents in the Superior Courts throughout the State under the supervision of an attorney. The Paralegal II performs specialized paralegal work within a complex program area or specialty field, in support of the activities of attorneys in the Transportation Section. The paralegal functions include drafting complex legal documents, including amendments to complaints and responses to discovery; completing court-issued forms; researching complex issues without specific precedence; and interfacing on a front-end basis with clients, staff, and attorneys for the purpose of screening calls and/or summarizing communications between outside parties and the legal staff. In a litigation context, the Paralegal II participates in data gathering and preparation of exhibits, documents, and affidavits in advance of a trial. The employee is also responsible for the scheduling of witnesses, and the organization of supporting documents, exhibits, and evidence. The Paralegal II is responsible for scanning received legal documents and calendar management related to responses and due dates for legal document filing. The Paralegal II may assist attorneys in setting up a criminal appellate brief or in drafting statements of fact for criminal appellate briefs assigned as a part of the criminal brief rotation. The Paralegal II has considerable latitude in decision making, and decisions frequently must be made in which the consequence of error could have significant impact on the legal office, the agency, the agency’s clients, or segments of the general public served by the agency. Work is complex. Work is reviewed through inspection, conferences, reports, and review of completed work.
