Paralegal, Correctional Litigation
About The Position
This position works in a varied capacity and supports division attorneys by performing initial investigative review of claims filed against the Commonwealth and client agencies, including the Virginia Department of Corrections, the Virginia Parole Board, and the Department of Juvenile Justice. The role involves conducting witness interviews, preparing drafts of legal documents and memoranda for attorney review, maintaining document and file control, gathering relevant documents and video footage (including review and analysis of video footage and audio recordings), assisting in all phases of discovery, working with attorneys to handle electronic discovery, and assisting in trial preparation.
Requirements
- Competent working knowledge of legal terminology, and court procedures.
- Excellent written communication skills, as demonstrated in a writing sample.
- Exceptional verbal communication skills.
- Organizational skills.
- Proficiency in time management.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to organize and analyze large quantities of written and verbal information.
- Ability to work well under pressure and adjust priorities without close supervision.
- Litigation experience is required.
- Basic word processing skills.
Nice To Haves
- Bachelor's degree in related field and/or Paralegal Certificate.
- Experience with Microsoft Word.
- Experience with E Discovery.
