About The Position

This position involves coordinating activities or performing specialized duties to assist in providing instruction to and supervision of students in a variety of instructional and non-instructional programs, specifically within a Life Skills classroom. The role requires a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of 72 college quarter credits or passing an ETS test. The paraeducator must be able to communicate effectively, complete tasks accurately and efficiently without constant supervision, and relate positively to students, parents, and staff. They will work effectively with small groups or individual students under the supervision of certificated staff and maintain accurate records. Alternatives to these qualifications may be accepted by the board.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 72 college quarter credits from a nationally accredited institution OR pass ETS test
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • Ability to be accurate and efficient at completing tasks on time without constant/direct supervision
  • Ability to relate in a positive manner with students, parents, and staff/teachers, supervisory staff
  • Ability to work effectively with small groups or individual students under the supervision of certificated staff
  • Ability to accurately keep records
  • Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI
  • Within the first year of employment, successfully complete the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators provided by the District, as defined in RCW 28A.413.070, and continue to meet future requirements as mandated by the State.
  • Willingness to obtain/possess a current First Aid card
  • Physical ability to perform required duties
  • Willingness to receive training in crisis intervention and/or restraining techniques, and use those skills as determined by certified staff.

Responsibilities

  • Meet performance expectations as outlined in MLSD #161 Classified Employee Performance Evaluation.
  • Be punctual and inform supervisor early of any required absences to avoid workflow interruption.
  • Maintain a well-groomed, neat, and clean appearance, dressing appropriately for the job assignment.
  • Perform custodial care activities, including lifting and feeding students, and assisting with toileting and grooming needs (diapering may be necessary).
  • Lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Promptly and accurately follow specific instructions and perform duties with a positive attitude.
  • Follow a duty schedule as assigned.
  • Follow prescribed behavior plans as assigned.
  • Apply appropriate discipline according to district procedures and behavior plans.
  • Work independently and solve problems with minimal supervision.
  • Work well with special needs children individually or in small groups to communicate learning objectives from their individualized educational program (IEP) under the supervision of certified staff.
  • Build positive relationships with special needs students.
  • Encourage special needs students to develop positive relationships with their peers.
  • Receive Non-violent Crisis Intervention and Non-violent Restraint training and effectively intervene and control students when they are out of control using approved restraining methods.
  • Receive training to understand specific disabilities.
  • Responsibly supervise special needs students in the classroom.
  • Supervise special needs students upon arrival and departure from school.
  • Monitor activities to ensure safety and compliance with school rules.
  • Provide emergency first aid as necessary.
  • Assist with medically fragile children.
  • Work with students with behavior difficulties.
  • Apply appropriate discipline according to district procedures.
  • Interpret as needed if the individual possesses multiple language skills.
  • Maintain excellent attendance.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
