About The Position

This position is for a Paraeducator Life Skills 1:1 with medical support at Knolls Vista Elementary. The role involves providing individualized medical support tailored to the specific needs of an assigned student, as directed by their healthcare plan and prescribed by the school nurse or physician. This may include delegated healthcare tasks such as managing seizures, catheterization, diabetes management, or other specialized medical care. The paraeducator will collaborate closely with the student's case manager and school nurse, perform delegated medical tasks, and support both educational and medical goals. Additionally, the role involves behavior support and de-escalation, lesson and classroom support, and requires completion of Safety-Care Behavioral Safety Training. Effective communication and accurate record-keeping are essential. The paraeducator is responsible for ensuring student safety at all times, demonstrating professionalism and adaptability, and participating in ongoing professional development. This is a special services position and may involve reassignment if the student no longer requires 1:1 support.

Requirements

• Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Must have earned 72 college level credits from an accredited institution of higher education, have a college degree, or be able to pass the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Assessment.
• Previous experience working with students in both individual and small group instructional situations.
• Working knowledge of education fundamentals.
• Previous experience and/or training working with students in a classroom setting.
• Must have proven ability to complete tasks in a fast-paced environment.
• Must be able to manage large groups of students in an unstructured environment while maintaining a high level of safety.
• Must have a proven record of punctuality and consistent attendance.
• Must be willing and able to assist students with personal management, including toileting, changing, eating, and other personal hygiene.
• Completion of Safety-Care Behavioral Safety Training is required.
• Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
• Complete required Safe Schools trainings.
• Obtain and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
• Obtain and maintain Safety Care certification.
• Within the first year of employment, successfully complete the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators provided by the District, as defined in RCW 28A.413.070, and continue to meet future requirements as mandated by the State.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized medical support tailored to the specific medical needs of the assigned student, including delegated healthcare tasks such as managing seizures, catheterization, diabetes management, or other specialized medical care.
• Collaborate closely with the student's case manager and school nurse to ensure medical needs are addressed in alignment with the student’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) and healthcare plan.
• Perform delegated medical tasks under the direction and delegation of the school nurse, such as supporting seizure management protocols, assisting with catheterization and other personal medical care needs, and administering or monitoring diabetes care.
• Support educational and medical goals by following teacher's lesson plans and providing assistance in academic and self-help skills.
• Assist with the preparation and/or assembly of teaching materials.
• Supervise students during both academic and non-academic activities.
• Assist in following detailed behavior intervention plans (BIPs), implementing appropriate behavior management strategies, and using de-escalation techniques.
• Assist in the implementation of daily instructional lessons, following the guidance of the supervising teacher.
• Assist in administering tests, evaluating student progress, and modifying student work within the context of the lesson plan.
• Prepare teaching materials and help organize classroom activities.
• Assist the teacher in supervisory tasks, such as monitoring student behavior and ensuring a safe learning environment.
• Communicate effectively and proficiently, both orally and in writing, with teachers, the school nurse, and other team members.
• Keep accurate records of medical tasks, student behavior, and academic performance.
• Ensure the student’s safety at all times during movement across school property, class transitions, recess, meals, and other school activities.
• Maintain constant vigilance during the student’s movement and enforce school rules and district policies.
• Demonstrate adaptability, including responding to changes in location, schedule, duties, and hours.
• Maintain punctuality and inform supervisor of absences.
• Maintain confidentiality of student medical records and personal information.
• Support other areas as needed if the student is absent.
• Accept responsibility for assignments and outcomes, working cooperatively with the teaching team and other staff members.
• Support the student’s case manager and the school nurse in implementing the student’s healthcare and educational plan.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
