About The Position

This position serves as a Paraeducator Life Skills - One-on-One (Medical) at the Early Learning Preschool, working 6.25 hours per day for 171 days per year. The role involves coordinating activities or performing specialized duties to assist in the instruction and supervision of students with behavioral challenges in various instructional and non-instructional programs, within both Special Education and General Education settings. A key aspect of this role is providing individualized medical support tailored to the specific needs of the assigned student, which may include delegated healthcare tasks such as managing seizures, catheterization, diabetes management, or other specialized medical care, all under the direction of the school nurse or physician. The paraeducator will collaborate closely with the student's case manager and the school nurse to ensure medical needs are met in alignment with the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP) and healthcare plan. In addition to medical support, the paraeducator will assist with educational and self-help goals, implement behavior intervention plans, and provide lesson and classroom support. Safety-Care Behavioral Safety Training is required, and effective communication and accurate record-keeping are essential. The role demands adaptability, punctuality, and professionalism, including maintaining confidentiality of student information. If the student is absent, the paraeducator may support other areas. This is a special services position, and reassignment may occur if the student no longer requires 1:1 support.

Requirements

  • Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must have earned 72 college level credits from an accredited institution of higher education, have a college degree, or be able to pass the Educational Testing Service (ETS) Assessment.
  • Previous experience working with students in both individual and small group instructional situations.
  • Previous experience and/or training working with students in a classroom setting.
  • Must have proven ability to complete tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Must be able to manage large groups of students in an unstructured environment while maintaining a high level of safety.
  • Must have a proven record of punctuality and consistent attendance.
  • Must be willing and able to assist students with personal management, including toileting, changing, eating, and other personal hygiene.
  • Criminal history clearance through Washington State Patrol and FBI.
  • Complete required Safe Schools trainings.
  • Obtain and maintain current CPR/First Aid certification.
  • Obtain and maintain Safety Care certification.
  • Within the first year of employment, successfully complete the Washington State Fundamental Course of Study for Paraeducators provided by the District, as defined in RCW 28A.413.070, and continue to meet future requirements as mandated by the State.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate activities or perform specialized duties to assist in providing instruction to and supervision of students with behavioral challenges.
  • Provide individualized medical support, including delegated healthcare tasks such as managing seizures, catheterization, diabetes management, or other specialized medical care, as directed by the school nurse or physician.
  • Collaborate with the student's case manager and school nurse to ensure medical needs are addressed in alignment with the student's IEP and healthcare plan.
  • Perform medical tasks such as supporting seizure management protocols, assisting with catheterization and other personal medical care needs, and administering or monitoring diabetes care as delegated by the RN.
  • Support educational and medical goals by following teacher's lesson plans and providing assistance in academic and self-help skills.
  • Assist with the preparation and/or assembly of teaching materials.
  • Supervise students during both academic and non-academic activities.
  • Assist in following detailed behavior intervention plans (BIPs), implementing appropriate behavior management strategies, and using de-escalation techniques.
  • Assist in the implementation of daily instructional lessons, following the guidance of the supervising teacher.
  • Assist in administering tests, evaluating student progress, and modifying student work within the context of the lesson plan.
  • Prepare teaching materials and help organize classroom activities.
  • Assist the teacher in supervisory tasks, such as monitoring student behavior and ensuring a safe learning environment.
  • Complete required Safety-Care Behavioral Safety Training.
  • Communicate effectively and proficiently, both orally and in writing, with teachers, the school nurse, and other team members.
  • Keep accurate records of medical tasks, student behavior, and academic performance.
  • Ensure the student's safety at all times during movement across school property, class transitions, recess, meals, and other school activities.
  • Demonstrate adaptability, including responding to changes in location, schedule, duties, and hours.
  • Maintain punctuality and inform supervisor of absences.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student medical records and personal information.
  • Support other areas as needed if the student is absent.
  • Accept responsibility for assignments and outcomes, working cooperatively with the teaching team and other staff members.
  • Support the student’s case manager and the school nurse in implementing the student’s healthcare and educational plan.
  • Perform other like job-related duties as assigned.
  • Serve as a health room para when the student is not present or provide other 1:1 support.
