About The Position

Under direction of a school administrator, the Paraeducator – Critical Skills assists a certificated teacher with instruction to individual and/or small groups of students with disabilities. This position provides assistance to students with activities of daily living; performs instructional and clerical duties.

Requirements

• Basic concepts of child growth and developmental behavior characteristics particularly pertaining to students with disabilities.
• Effective methods of working with students who have special needs and learning disabilities.
• Positive behavior management strategies and techniques.
• Basic subjects including arithmetic, grammar, spelling and reading.
• Effective interpersonal and communication skills.
• Record keeping techniques.
• Proper handling techniques of hazardous materials.
• Bus rules and regulations.
• Computer operation/data entry, word processing and spreadsheets.
• Engage directly with students with varying levels of ability in all school environments.
• Provide toileting and feeding support to students as required.
• Remain calm during emergency situations.
• Understand and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
• Maintain confidentiality of student information.
• Perform routine clerical tasks and use instructional support equipment including computers.
• Learn and apply basic teaching, supervision, and behavior management techniques and methods.
• Understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
• Work effectively as part of a team in support of students with disabilities.
• Learn and implement nonviolent crisis intervention techniques as assigned.
• Work directly with students in a manner that demonstrates respect.
• Assist students with mobility (including lifting, transferring, positioning) or personal care. This may include pushing or assisting students in wheelchairs, walkers or other mobility devices.
• Correctly lift up to 50 pounds with assistance.
• Graduation from high school and two years’ experience as an Instructional Assistant working with children with disabilities.
• Possession of a First Aid/CPR Certificate issued by an authorized agency.
• District Paraprofessional Proficiency Exam certification mandated by the State of California for Paraprofessionals.
• Certification may be granted in one of the following three ways: 1. Possession of an Associate’s Degree (AA); or 2. Completion of 48 college semester units (official transcripts required); or 3. Completion and passage of the district-approved proficiency test.

Responsibilities

• Assist teacher by reinforcing instruction to the whole class, small groups or individual students.
• Support academic, behavioral, social and functional skills development.
• Assist in carrying out the individual educational plan to students in all areas of need.
• Maintain records, collect and record data related to student performance and behavior.
• Communicate with teachers regarding student progress and conduct.
• Implement schoolwide, classroom and individual positive behavior intervention strategies across school settings.
• Assist with bus boarding and departing.
• Assist with preparing, serving and feeding meals and instructing during meals.
• Administer first aid and remain informed of medical needs.
• Assist in keeping learning spaces clean, safe and conducive to learning.
• Assist in using adaptive equipment including communication devices.
• Perform specialized health care procedures after training and with ongoing support from the credentialed nurse. These include medications, specialized toileting procedures, seizure monitoring, cardiac monitoring. These shall not include injection, catheterization, suctioning.
• Assist students, either verbally of physically, if needed, with daily living activities such as ambulating, grooming, toileting, dressing and eating.
• Use proper lifting techniques to physically assist non-ambulatory students with position, lifting, moving and transferring in adaptive equipment (e.g. wheelchair, hoyer lift, positioning mat, gait trainer, adaptive seating).
• Use appropriate strategies when working with students in crisis (e.g. students who are dysregulated or elope). Following appropriate training, participate in physical restraint of students during behavior emergencies.
