About The Position

This position involves working with and supervising students who have special needs, specifically those with significant physical disabilities in a life skills classroom setting and during additional school activities. The paraeducator will collaborate with the special education teacher, other paraeducators, and specialists. Duties include implementing educational instruction, assisting with diapering, feeding (including tube feeding), lifting, and positioning students. The role may also involve administering medication and/or catheterizing students after receiving training. The paraeducator will be responsible for documentation to monitor student progress and will perform all duties in accordance with Kennewick School District policies and procedures. Other related duties may be assigned.

Requirements

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
Must have an AA degree OR 72 quarter college credits OR 48 semester college credits OR a passing score on the ETS test.
Must attach unofficial transcript proving AA degree or equivalent to application.
Official transcripts of all levels of education, including high school, required within 30 days of hire.
Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to meet the Physical Demands of the position.
Must pass a basic skills test.
Completion of Safe Schools Web Based Training within 30 days of hire and yearly thereafter.
Must pass a background check, which includes employee paid fingerprinting.
If required, CPI training must be obtained at the next available opportunity.
Must uphold board policies and follow administrative procedures.
Must take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
Must attend in-service trainings or other meetings as required, as well as attend any training as directed by management.
Evidence of ability to assess and correct issues involving safety.
Evidence of ability to establish and maintain a tactful, cooperative, and effective relationship with students, parents, staff, fellow employees, and management.
Evidence of ability to approach assigned work in a professional manner, working toward the common goal of teamwork, pride in service delivery, and continuous improvement.
Must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language to communicate verbally and in writing with students, parents, district staff members, and other concerned people regarding all aspects of their job-related activities.
Must be able to use basic computer programs to maintain records, enter timecard information, and read and respond to email.
Must be first-aid certified or be willing to acquire first aid training as soon as possible.
Ability to run quickly after students with elopement issues and be able to visually track individual student movement.
Able and willing to feed and diaper children who have motoric difficulties and require assistance in the bathroom setting.
Able to be flexible with the varied demands of the position.
Able to communicate effectively and work with a variety of people.
Able to follow directions in a team situation.
Willingness to support and promote the classroom teachers and to maintain a warm and friendly relationship with those teachers.
Able to carry out prescribed instructional and behavioral management program.

Bilingual skills preferred.
Ability and willingness to safely supervise students during transition periods.
Training and experience in working with students with disabilities and developmental needs.
Willingness to work with all children within the school regardless of abilities, including toileting and other needed responsibilities, i.e., tube feeding.
Able to recognize, manage, and implement behavior intervention strategies when appropriate.
Able to maintain documentation of ongoing student behavioral data, and be able to report back to the IEP team.
Evidence of positive evaluations and recommendations.

Responsibilities

Carrying out educational instruction.
Diapering, feeding, or tube feeding students.
Lifting and positioning students.
Administering medication and/or catheterizing students (with training).
Keeping documentation to monitor student progress.
Performing all duties within the scope of Kennewick School District policies and procedures.
Providing direct support to students with developmental delays, medical needs, and/or autism under the supervision of the classroom teacher.
Following specific directions from the teacher regarding data collection, classroom rules, classroom set-up, and student directives.
Taking appropriate and thorough data on assigned forms and completing required paperwork accurately and efficiently.
Providing support for the physical/health needs of students.
Assisting teachers with clerical or instructional tasks, including making copies and creating materials.
Supervising and controlling students to promote a safe, orderly, and positive learning climate.
Supervising students during recess, playing, and interacting with assigned students, including role-modeling.
Performing other job-related duties as assigned.
