About The Position

The Para Professional/Pre-Kindergarten shall assist the teacher with all children, which may require an unusual amount of patience, empathy, flexibility, and the development of an effective relationship with children. He/she must be able to provide support to the teacher and to students in a manner that improves the overall quality of education in the classroom.

Requirements

  • Experience working with young children.
  • Good oral communication skills.
  • Current valid certification in pediatric CPR and First Aid or get training within two (2) months of accepting the position.
  • Meets all current requirements for Para Professional Certification as defined by the Rhode Island Department of Education.
  • Must complete Rhode Island Early Learning and Development Standards Course.
  • Must complete 20 hours of professional development each year.
  • Must participate in any required RIDE professional development.
  • Ability to use age and developmentally appropriate instructional procedure and reinforcement techniques.
  • Exhibits sensitivity and understanding of individuals and cultural differences.
  • Respects confidentiality.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Knowledge of general office equipment.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to learn adaptive technology.
  • Good organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Perform under the teacher’s supervision and direction in all areas of school activities and instruction.
  • Assist the teacher with implementing the curriculum.
  • Assist the teacher with setting up learning activities.
  • Assist the children with classroom activities.
  • Work individually or with small groups of children.
  • Accompany children to special classes (art, music, physical education).
  • Assist children during breakfast, lunch and snack.
  • Help maintain a clean and organized classroom.
  • Ensure sanitation of all surfaces, equipment, and materials.
  • Accompany children to the bathroom.
  • Supervise outdoor activities.
  • Assist with dismissal procedures.
  • Actively play with students in classroom and during outdoor learning.
  • Able to sit in small chairs and on the floor.
  • Able to lift furniture (i.e. cots, tables).
