About The Position

The Paraprofessional, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, will assist the Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher with students in the classroom, assisting in the care and management of students. The Paraprofessional, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, will be responsible for material preparation and clerical tasks. The Paraprofessional, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, will work under the supervision of member(s) of the instructional or administrative staff, directly reporting to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) teacher and Lead Interpreter as needed. In specific cases, the Paraprofessional, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, may be assigned to work with a student on a 1:1 basis within a classroom outside of the D/HH environment. Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates a firm command of American Sign Language/Signed English and can converse and explain directions, social interactions, and safety commands if assigned to a Total Communication classroom.
  • Aids in monitoring and maintenance of audio equipment and assistive technology, including, but not limited to, hearing aids, cochlear implants, boots, FM systems.
  • Conducts hearing aid checks and may assist with replacement of batteries.
  • Reports any incidental observations to instructor (e.g., student turns equipment off, refuses to wear it, complains about equipment function/feel, carelessness in handling, loss, or damage).
  • Assists specific students in a 1:1 capacity as age or exceptionalities require.
  • Demonstrates understanding and use of students’ Individual Educational Plan (IEP) accommodations.
  • Assists teachers in classroom preparation.
  • Assembles/maintains classroom displays.
  • Prepares/assists in development of instructional materials geared toward deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Develops learning aids or guided activities such as picture vocabulary, science specimens, and library tools.
  • Copy materials, laminate items, etc.
  • Operates and stores audio/visual equipment and other instructional systems.
  • Assists in completion of forms, schedules, check charts, other data as required.
  • Aids teacher in supervision of learning activities and reinforces skills introduced by teacher.
  • Carries out routine practice exercises assigned by the teacher, under direction/supervision of teacher.
  • Circulates the classroom during instructional time or independent activity; provides support as needed.
  • Assists the teacher in checking/marking classwork and tests.
  • Supervises students while on school campus, including duties as assigned by administration/classroom teacher/DHH supervisors to ensure student safety and appropriate behavior.
  • Performs any other duties as assigned.
