About The Position

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: To apply protective and decorative coatings to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures; to strip, restain, shellac and varnish furniture; and to do related work as required. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Receives work assignments from a superior with considerable latitude for the use of independent judgement in the application of the practices and techniques of the trade; work is reviewed usually upon completion for satisfactory performance. SUPERVISION EXERCISED: As required, supervises the work of helpers or others assigned to assist.

Requirements

  • A thorough knowledge of practices, techniques, tools, equipment and materials used in interior and exterior surface painting and skill in the application of such practices and techniques
  • A working knowledge of various kinds of paints, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers and calcimines, their adaptability and uses
  • A working knowledge of safety measures and precautions
  • Skill in mixing and matching paint
  • Skill in the application of paints and other finishes with brush or spray gun
  • The ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Completion of eight school grades
  • Employment as a journeyman painter
  • Any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience
  • At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician's certificate.

Responsibilities

  • To apply protective and decorative coatings to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and structures.
  • To mix paints, sizes, varnishes, enamels, lacquers, calcimines and paint and varnish removers and to match paints as required.
  • To wash and clean surfaces preparatory to painting.
  • To wash painted surfaces and remove paint.
  • To do varnishing, finishing, lacquering, enameling and calcimining jobs.
  • To prepare floors for painting and waxing.
  • To strip, restain, fill, shellac and varnish desks, tables and other furniture.
  • To cut and set glass for windows and doors.
  • To do paper hanging.
  • To do minor plaster repairs, spackling, and dry wall taping.
  • To build and climb scaffolding for interior and exterior work.
  • To keep tools and brushes in good condition.
  • As required, to requisition supplies and materials.
  • To do related work as required.
