About The Position

The Painter performs a variety of advanced technical and skilled duties including drywall patching/repair, carpentry repair/staining and prepping/painting for 9 library locations.

Requirements

  • High school graduation or equivalent and three to five years experience in patching and finishing drywall, surface preparation and commercial painting or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Utah driver license and a clean driving record.
  • Must be available to work occasional nights and/or weekends and before or after Library hours.
  • Experience in working with vendors or other suppliers on large jobs.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance, carpentry, plumbing, facility repair.
  • Knowledge of regulations governed by state and federal building codes, health codes, safety codes, fire codes, ADA, OSHA, etc.; and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Working knowledge of computerized mechanical systems.
  • Ability to perform routine record keeping functions; exercise initiative and independent judgment and to react resourcefully under varying conditions; plan and schedule work priorities effectively; read and interpret building plans and specifications; communicate effectively in English both verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other agencies, vendors, contractors and the public.
  • Ability to move objects weighing up to 90 lbs.
  • Ability to work in adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, heights, and temperature extremes.

Responsibilities

  • Fosters good working relationships with diverse people including staff, patrons, volunteers and vendors.
  • Accepts assignments from supervisor, manager or other Library staff in a professional and timely manner.
  • Prepares painting surface by cleaning, removes any paint or other covering, fills holes with appropriate material, repairs or replaces damaged drywall, and smooths surface by sanding or scraping.
  • Removes or covers any fixtures (switch and outlet covers, pictures), spreads drop cloths on floor and or furniture, and covers surfaces, such as baseboards, door frames, and windows with masking tape and paper to protect surfaces during painting.
  • Selects premixed paints, or mixes required portions of pigment, oil, and thinning and drying substances to prepare paint that matches specified colors.
  • Paints surfaces, using brushes, spray guns, or paint rollers. May be required to simulate wood grain, marble, brick, or tile effects.
  • Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders when required to perform tasks above ground level.
  • Cleans work area at the end of work day and upon job completion. Removes drop cloths, tape and coverings from the paint site. Cleans any residual dust or paint drops/spills from the work area.
  • Replaces covers and fixtures (switch and outlet covers, pictures, or other wall hangings).
  • Fixes, replaces, restores interior and exterior trim pieces. Applies varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and/or protect interior or exterior surfaces, timings and fixtures of buildings.
  • Determines materials needed to complete assigned work orders. Purchases materials and supplies needed.
  • Participates in the negotiations of vendor contracts and assigned services and monitors contract performance. Works with vendors to resolve any issues.
  • Will be placed on an emergency call list. May be required to respond to 24-hour emergencies and perform emergency building or equipment repair.
  • Keeps the vehicle clean inside and out. Drives vehicle in a safe manner at all times, always wearing a seat belt, and obeying all traffic rules.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or required.
