About The Position

The Painter for Pima County Facilities Management performs painting and maintenance work on county buildings and facilities. Responsibilities include supporting new construction and tenant improvement projects, furniture and wood restoration/refinishing, drywall repair and finishing, graffiti abatement, and parking lot striping as needed. This position reports to the Metro Maintenance Shop, located downtown at 150 W. Congress Street.

Requirements

  • Completion of an industry-recognized apprenticeship in the painting trade or craft AND one year of journey-level experience in the painting trade or craft. (Relevant experience and/or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted.) OR: Three years with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Technician in the painting trade or craft.
  • Valid driver license is required at time of application. Valid AZ driver license is required at time of appointment.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to a 39-month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine applicant’s suitability to operate county vehicles in accordance with Pima County administrative procedures.
  • The ability to obtain a jail pass is required.
  • The County requires pre-employment background checks.
  • Successful candidates will receive a post-offer, pre-employment background screening to include verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
  • Some positions may require satisfactory completion of a personal background investigation by the court or law enforcement agencies, due to the need for access to County Attorney and Court facilities, records, and communication systems.
  • This position will require a post-job offer physical and/or drug screen.

Nice To Haves

  • Minimum three (3) years journeymen level experience and training as a painter.
  • Minimum three (3) years experience taping, texturing, and finishing drywall.
  • Experience with preparing surfaces to be painted including sanding, scraping, patching, pressure washing.
  • Experience with airless, conventional, and High-Volume Low Pressure (HVLP) spray equipment.
  • Experience with applying specialty paints, stains, water based, oil based, primers, industrial coatings, and acrylics.
  • Experience with various drywall finishes (1-5), up to and including level 5.
  • Experience with layout and construction of metal/wood stud framing principles referencing blueprint and/or shop type drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Performs surface preparation including scraping, sanding, cleaning, patching holes and cracks with caulk or putty, and priming surfaces to ensure proper paint adherence.
  • Uses hand tools, power tools, pressure washers, or even specialized equipment like sandblasting gear for industrial coatings.
  • Applies various materials, including acrylic and oil-based paints, enamels, varnishes, sealants, and specialty finishes like epoxies and urethanes, using brushes, rollers, or spray guns.
  • Adheres to strict safety regulations, following proper containment procedures when working on older buildings.
  • Coordinates with other maintenance staff and project supervisors.
  • Maintains records of materials used and completes work orders.
  • Estimates material costs.
  • Ensures all work meets quality standards.
