About The Position

The Painter Maintenance Technician position is a full-time, non-exempt role within the Custodial and Maintenance division at Proviso Math & Science Academy. This position is responsible for performing painting and surface work as primary duties, as well as providing support for general maintenance and facilities operations. The role operates on a 260-day work year with anticipated hours of 12.5 months, and is part of the Proviso Custodial and Maintenance Union SEIU Local 73, CTW. The position reports to the Custodial and Maintenance Building Lead and the Director of Buildings and Grounds.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Proven experience as a painter in commercial, educational, or institutional settings.
• Knowledge of painting materials, techniques, surface preparation, and safety procedures.
• Ability to perform minor maintenance and support facilities operations.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to high-quality workmanship.
• Physical ability to lift, bend, climb ladders, and work on elevated surfaces.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and collaborate with other facilities staff.

Responsibilities

• Prepare surfaces for painting, including sanding, patching, scraping, cleaning, and priming walls, ceilings, doors, and trim.
• Apply paint, stain, varnish, or other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces using brushes, rollers, and spray equipment.
• Perform touch-ups and maintenance painting to ensure uniform color and finish.
• Match paint colors and mix paints accurately to achieve consistent results.
• Remove old paint, wallpaper, or graffiti as needed.
• Protect surrounding areas during painting projects to prevent spills or damage.
• Maintain all painting tools and equipment in clean, safe, and working condition.
• Assist with minor repairs such as patching walls, replacing hardware, or basic carpentry.
• Support event setups, furniture moving, and other general maintenance tasks.
• Report major facility or safety issues to the building lead promptly.
• Maintain organized storage of paints, supplies, and equipment.
• Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the administration.
