About The Position

Under general supervision, performs a variety of painting tasks, matching and mixing of paints and surface preparation for various municipal buildings, facilities, and equipment. This role involves preparing surfaces and applying protective and decorative coats of paint and related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures using brushes, spray guns, or airless spray guns. The position also includes inspecting surfaces, planning color schemes, mixing paints, erecting and removing ladders and scaffolds, cleaning and maintaining equipment, observing safety regulations, ordering materials, and keeping records. The Painter II may also paint signs, schedule work for subordinate employees, and perform other related duties.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of basic materials, tools and equipment used in painting and general building maintenance and repair work.
  • Knowledge of general painting and building maintenance and repair practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of safe work practices.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping practices.
  • Knowledge of general arithmetic.
  • Ability to perform journey level work in painting.
  • Ability to assist on work projects and assignments.
  • Ability to use the required tools and equipment effectively and safely.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to work from basic sketches.
  • Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Ability to estimate time and material requirements of basic projects and assignments.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Ability to read and write at the level required for successfully job performance.
  • Ability to meet physical and health status requirements for this classification and work category as described in the City’s Medical Standards for Applicants and Employees.
  • Five (5) years of experience performing at the journey level in painting.
  • Possession of an appropriate California Driver’s license issued by the State Department of Motor Vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares surfaces and applies protective and decorative coats of paint and related materials to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures using brushes, spray guns or airless spray guns.
  • Applies paints, enamels, stains, shellacs, varnishes, finishes and refinishes furniture, fixtures and related equipment.
  • Inspects surfaces to determine need for painting.
  • Plans and prepares color schemes, selects and mixes colors and fillers, mixes and matches paint.
  • Erects and removes ladders and scaffolds.
  • Cleans and maintains brushes, rollers, spray guns and related equipment.
  • Observes safety rules and regulations.
  • Orders material and equipment.
  • Keeps routine records.
  • May paint signs.
  • May schedule and explain specific work assignments to subordinate employees.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
