About The Position

Painter 1 at Utilimaster is a Regular Employee, Hourly Non-Exempt position responsible for painting full-sized vehicles with minimal defects. The role involves performing preventive maintenance on paint equipment, identifying and repairing paint defects, verifying cleaning chemical concentrations, and preparing vehicle cabs and parts for paint. The painter will spray base coat and clear coat, mix tints to match paint codes, and maintain documentation. Responsibilities also include coordinating material movement, loading and unloading parts, learning and retaining skills, reading instructions and blueprints, self-checking work, using various tools, meeting production goals, maintaining a clean and safe work area, initiating process improvements, supporting 5S, and communicating with cross-functional teams to resolve issues. The role requires solving complex problems with minimal assistance and knowing various customer vehicles and trucks. Additional duties include masking multiple color units, training FAP Paint, undercoating, paint touch-up, and wheel alignment.

Requirements

HS Diploma or GED required
Minimum 1-2 years Automotive paint experience
Excellent attendance
Positive attitude
Strong and consistent attention to detail
Self-motivated with the ability to stay on task
Team oriented
Basic computer skills are required
No critical shortcomings on last performance review
Demonstrated understanding of Paint materials and cleaning chemicals
Able to tolerate very high heat temperatures, high dust, and exposure to chemicals
Able to work overtime on short notice
Willing to wear PPE respirators for extended amount of time
Willing to improve self / area / company (including pursuing additional training, if needed)
Willing to develop a working knowledge of company’s systems (example: AS/400)

Nice To Haves

Automotive paint certification or vocational school certificate preferred
Vocational training for automotive finishing, preferred

Responsibilities

Responsible for painting full sized vehicles with very minimal defects
Perform preventive maintenance on paint equipment
Identify and spot repair paint defects in accordance with appearance specification
Verify cleaning chemical concentrations
Pre-treat and prep cabs and parts for paint
Spray base coat and clear coat
Mix tints following a formula to match paint codes
Maintain accurate documentation of paint codes
Coordinate material movement within the paint area
Load and unload parts on racking or carts per process documentation
Learn and retain skills and practices needed to complete duties in assigned area
Read and follow detailed operator instructions, installation drawings, blueprints, etcetera, as required by a particular area
Self-check work and inspect prior processes
Use basic hand, electric, cordless, and pneumatic tools, as required
Meet production goals
Maintain a clean and safe work area
Initiate process improvements
Support 5S in work area
Communicate with manufacturing and other cross-functional teams (engineering, materials, purchasing, sales, etcetera) to resolve issues
Solve complex problems with minimal assistance
Know various customer vehicles and trucks
Ability to mask multiple color units & train FAP Paint
