Requirements

  • A current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of New York
  • ASN Required
  • Registered Nurses must possess the ability to assess, plan, direct, intervene and evaluate patient care
  • The RN must be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and written
  • The RN must be able to accommodate an on-call rotation to include 1 weekday night every 2-3 weeks, 1 weekend every 4-6 weeks, and major holidays (New Year’s Day; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day, Thanksgiving & Black Friday; Christmas)

Nice To Haves

  • BSN Preferred
  • Phase I recovery experience preferred
  • critical care experience highly recommended
  • experience in electronic health record documentation preferred (training built into orientation plan)

Responsibilities

  • Recovery of surgeries in specialties including general, colorectal, gynecological, urological, ENT, plastics, thoracic & esophageal, vascular, orthopedic & neuro
  • Knowledge of types of Anesthesia including general-endotracheal, regional, spinal/epidural, Monitored Anesthesia Care (MAC)
  • Understanding of recovery needs in diverse patient populations: pediatric, adult & geriatric; outpatient, acute and critical care (including vent management); special needs including developmental and physical disabilities, ADHD, autism spectrum
  • Adherence to patient care Best Practices based on core curriculum set by the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses (ASPAN): 1:2 RN-patient ratio (1:1 for peds, critical care, special needs); airway management; postoperative pain & nausea; hemodynamics; correction of hypothermia; progression to Phase II recovery vs. admission plan of care
  • Other Best Practice initiatives for the PACU RN include: signs/symptoms/treatment of Malignant Hyperthermia (MH); reversal of opiates/benzodiazepines/anesthetic agents in PACU; proper body mechanics and use of lift/transfer assist devices in PACU; treatment of, and emotional/physical support of the patient and colleague during, Emergence Delirium
