R&D - Packaging Engineer

About The Position

As a Packaging Engineer, you will design and develop primary and secondary packaging for a cross-section of Duracell products per Global Sector Initiative Master Plans. The primary focus will be on Lithium Coin and new product packaging. You will support Front End Innovation, Material and Structural Development in line with our Sustainability Principals. The scope includes the introduction of new packaging materials, styles, and equipment, across the Duracell Global Segments, with a focus on cost savings on materials and labor. You will work cross-functionally on project teams and with packaging sites, creating Technical Packaging Specifications, Standards, and Bills of Material.

Requirements

  • 2-5 years’ experience in Packaging Engineering/Design related work. Related Internship experience is included.
  • Technical Mastery – Ideal candidate has demonstrated understanding and capability to work with packaging systems, materials, costing and processes.
  • Strong understanding of package testing to assure developed concepts will function within the targeted environment is critical.
  • Organization – Must be able to manage multiple priorities and details while maintaining focus on the larger picture, able to work well independently.
  • Communication – Strong skills required. The ability to communicate effectively, both written and oral is critical. You will be dealing with internal customers, suppliers, and the overall Packaging organization domestically and globally on a regular basis.
  • Collaboration – Must have demonstrated the ability to work well with and across other functions and levels, as well as with suppliers.
  • Embraces Change - strong ability and interest in working in a fast paced and flexible environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Packaging Engineer degree preferred.
  • Knowledge and understanding of packaging design validation standards (ISO, ASTM, etc.), drafting and specification standards is a preference.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in 3D design software and rapid prototyping is preferred.
  • Knowledge in packaging technology & materials and certificate of packaging science highly desired.
  • Occasional domestic and international travel required.
  • Knowledge of the following programs beneficial: 3D Structural Design example: Solid Works Cad Design: Artios Cad Adobe/Adobe Illustrator Microsoft Products

Responsibilities

  • Material development, Vendor development, Package structural development, internally and with external suppliers.
  • Work closely with R&D, on product and packaging innovations, specifically the interaction between package design on the product efficacy and stability.
  • Work closely with Engineering to optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance, and compliance with customer and internal requirements.
  • Work with manufacturing departments and site Packaging Personnel to ensure that the packaging designs are optimized for manufacturability.
  • Develop and qualify new packages, equipment, and materials.
  • Packaging Prototyping.
  • Performs and/or organizes required package testing to assure concepts will function within the targeted environment.
  • Records and maintains all testing data results.
  • Prepares, develops, and coordinates the necessary documentation for plants, vendors, marketing, distribution centers and retail customers.
  • Audits packaging trends.
  • Manage work and projects within defined critical path schedules.
  • Collaborate effectively with other functions internally, across the greater Duracell organization and with outside suppliers.
  • Other duties as assigned.
