About The Position

The Package Transportation Specialist is responsible for monitoring, supporting, and improving the successful execution of inbound and outbound packaged-goods shipments within US & Canada. Most shipments are automatically planned and tendered through the TMS Provider. This role monitors that execution, coordinates shipment requirements, intervenes when exceptions arise, and works across internal teams and the TMS Provider to resolve service risks. Areas of responsibility include shipment tracking and recovery, specialized delivery requirements, expedited shipments, spot bids, temperature-sensitive transportation, and in-transit accessorial needs. The specialist also supports continuous improvement across packaged transportation processes, system rules, carrier capabilities, shipment visibility, and standard operating procedures. The role may provide carrier and service recommendations to the TMS Provider and internal leadership but does not directly own carrier contracts, procurement, or formal carrier performance management.

Requirements

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent required
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in transportation logistics.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple time-sensitive exceptions and changing operational priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and decision-making skills, with the ability to identify trends and develop sustainable corrective actions.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence outcomes across internal teams, the TMS Provider, and external transportation partners.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and experience working with ERP, transportation-management, order-management, and shipment-visibility systems preferred.

Nice To Haves

  • bachelor’s degree in logistics, supply chain, business, operations, or a related field preferred.
  • Experience supporting full truckload, less-than-truckload, expedited, refrigerated, Protect-from-Freezing, or small-package transportation preferred.
  • Experience working with a managed transportation provider, TMS platform, or outsourced carrier network preferred.
  • Familiarity with specialized delivery equipment, accessorial services, spot-market transportation, freight-cost drivers, and transportation-performance metrics preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor inbound and outbound packaged-goods shipments across applicable modes, including full truckload, less-than-truckload, expedited, temperature-sensitive, and small-package services.
  • Review automated shipment planning and tendering outcomes to identify carrier rejections, uncovered loads, missed pickups, delivery risks, visibility gaps, or other exceptions requiring intervention.
  • Coordinate with the TMS Provider and internal stakeholders to resolve shipment exceptions while maintaining accurate and timely shipment information within applicable systems.
  • Proactively monitor pickup, transit, appointment, and delivery performance to identify potential service failures before they affect the customer.
  • Coordinate the expediting, rescue, recovery, or rebooking of shipments affected by capacity shortages, carrier failures, weather, equipment issues, missed appointments, or other disruptions.
  • Communicate timely status updates, risks, and recovery plans to Customer Support, Sales, Supply Chain, and other affected stakeholders, escalating significant service or customer-impacting issues when necessary.
  • Identify and coordinate customer-site delivery requirements such as liftgates, pallet jacks, flatbeds, delivery appointments, limited-access service, tarping, and other specialized equipment or accessorial needs.
  • Work with the TMS Provider to confirm that required services and equipment can be supported by designated carrier network and within applicable lanes before shipment execution.
  • Monitor shipments routed to the spot market and work with the TMS Provider to evaluate available capacity, service, timing, and cost.
  • Support expedited, urgent, or nonstandard transportation requests by communicating business requirements and evaluating proposed service options with the TMS Provider and internal stakeholders.
  • Serve as a primary day-to-day operational contact for the TMS Provider, communicating shipment priorities, service requirements, execution concerns, and emerging risks.
  • Document recurring service, capacity, visibility, or carrier-related concerns and provide supporting analysis and recommendations to the TMS Provider and internal leadership. Formal carrier contracting and performance management remain the responsibility of the TMS Provider.
  • Coordinate with Manufacturing, Warehousing, and Supply Chain regarding order readiness, loading schedules, facility constraints, shipment dimensions, and special handling requirements.
  • Support new customer and lane implementations by confirming service coverage, equipment needs, lead times, delivery-site capabilities, and required transportation instructions with the TMS Provider.
  • Analyze shipment exceptions and execution trends to identify opportunities to improve system rules, shipment inputs, mode selection, carrier coverage, lead times, visibility, and cost efficiency.
  • Help identify and reduce avoidable spot costs, detention, layovers, redelivery charges, truck-order-not-used fees, and other accessorial expenses.
  • Lead or support root-cause analysis, corrective actions, system enhancements, and the development and maintenance of packaged transportation SOPs, tools, and training materials.
  • Ensure relevant shipment instructions, equipment needs, temperature requirements, and delivery restrictions are accurately documented and communicated to the TMS Provider.
  • Immediately escalate safety incidents, damaged or compromised freight, temperature excursions, spills, product-quality concerns, or suspected compliance issues.
