About The Position

Responsible for the management of reporting of clinical APPs including all activities related to direct and facilitated patient care, service line development, quality improvement goals strategic planning and protocol or policy enforcement, including APP clinical work product at top of scope or adherence to the Hospital Playbook. Provides overall day to day supervision and problem solving, and scheduling while providing clinical expertise and mentoring. Precept or assigning preceptor for APP students. Assist manager with administrative duties. Position will typically be 20% administrative and 80% clinical in area of expertise or as determined by the APP Manager or Director. We are seeking a highly skilled Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our Cardiothoracic Critical Care Team within the Cardiovascular Surgery Service Line. This role provides comprehensive patient care from admission through discharge, with a focus on perioperative management in the Cardiac Surgical ICU. The APP will manage ventilators, sedation, hemodynamics, and diagnostics, and coordinate care with multidisciplinary teams. Clinical expertise in managing complex conditions such as shock, sepsis, respiratory failure, heart and renal failure, arrhythmias, and post-operative cardiac patients is essential. Responsibilities may include advanced procedures such as central and arterial line placement, pulmonary artery catheter placement, and point-of-care ultrasound. Additionally, the APP may sit on committees and participate in Quality and Process Improvement Initiatives. This is a 24/7 service requiring rotation through days, nights, weekends, and holidays, with regional cross-coverage at other hospital sites.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Physician Assistant studies or Nursing
  • Bachelor's Degree or AMA recognized PA program that is accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for Physician Assistants and meet requirements of the state.
  • 3 years of relevant experience Clinical Practice as an APP
  • 1 year of relevant experience In a leadership role
  • LIC-Physician Assistant or RN - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Basic Life Support (BLS) - ARC American Red Cross Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Adv Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) - AHA American Heart Association Upon Hire required
  • CRT-DEA Registration - STATE_MI State of Michigan Upon Hire required
  • CRT-Physician Asst Certified (PA-C) - NCCPA National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants Upon Hire required

  • Collaborates with regional and service line leadership to identify strategic clinical growth and process improvement.
  • Participates in regional, service line and leadership meetings/committees as requested.
  • Manages change in service line with bidirectional communication between APP Director and service line leaders to APP Supervisors and APPs.
  • Oversight and development daily schedules, including coverage for unexpected staffing situations.
  • Clinical training and orientation of new APP staff.
  • Precepting or overseeing APP students.
  • Assist manager in interviewing, performance evaluations, OPPE/FPPE, certification maintenance, coaching and development of department level education of all reporting APPs.
  • Work clinically, ln 80% in area of clinical expertise, or as determined by APP Manager.
