About The Position

The Department of Neurology is seeking an ARNP/PA Hospitalist to provide personalized care to patients in the Comprehensive Stroke Center. The Hospitalist performs overall medical care and medical management, primarily in an inpatient setting, and exercises autonomy in medical decision-making and services provided under a collaborative practice agreement. This position requires occasional weekend coverage responsibilities as clinically indicated.

Requirements

• Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner (ARNP) or Physician Associate (PA) qualification.
• Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Nursing (for ARNP) or Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners (for PA).
• Graduation from an accredited master’s or doctorate level nursing educational program (for ARNP) or an accredited PA educational program (for PA).
• Certification by an accepted accrediting agency (for ARNP) or certification by the NCCPA (for PA).
• Current license to practice nursing in Iowa (for ARNP) or current license to practice in Iowa (for PA).
• Current certification in specialty area and/or licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa (for ARNP).
• Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice.
• Considerable (3 to 5 years) experience in the specialty area of neuroscience.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

• Considerable (3-5 years) experience in the specialty area of neuroscience, with 1-3 years of this experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.
• Experience with patient and staff education.
• Demonstrated ability to develop and implement new programs.
• Experience with evidence-based practice or research utilization.
• Participation in professional PA/ARNP organizations.

Responsibilities

• Performs direct patient care, including diagnostic and therapeutic services in the inpatient and outpatient settings.
• Is responsible for discharge preparation, education and assurance of follow up for each patient on the service.
• Conducts comprehensive assessments focused on inpatient neurological/stroke needs of patients.
• Collaborates with the stroke services care team members, patient/family and other referring providers to formulate, implement, coordinate, evaluate and modify care plans that are individualized, multimodal/comprehensive and evidence-based.
• Works with patients and families to determine their understanding of the patient’s condition, proposed treatment plan and treatment options, provide appropriate education; discusses and develops goals of care and identify measurable treatment objectives.
• Assists the patient, family and primary care provider(s) with the implementation of the plan of care in the home and community.
• Triages phone calls and provides assistance with transition of care from inpatient to outpatient and/or other healthcare facility.
• Assesses and facilitates referrals and consultations to other services per patient needs.
• Completes documentation and billing procedures according to institutional and departmental guidelines. Ensures that documentation identifies goals of care and facilitates interdisciplinary communication.
• Demonstrates accountability for evaluation of clinical practice, including adherence to organizational, state and national practice standards and codes.
• Assures clinical competency and expertise in the area of stroke care and general neurology.
• Promotes health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from inpatient to outpatient settings and help facilitate discharge planning.
• Initiates and coordinates referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
• Provides anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families and provide education and serve as a resource for ancillary staff in area of clinical expertise.
• Provides education and serves as a resource for nursing staff, medical and advanced practice provider students, and residents in area of clinical expertise.
• Serves in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practices and patient outcomes.
• Participates in the development and implementation of divisional and departmental QA/QI/research programs.
• Participates in consent and protocols for clinical trials/research projects in conjunction with other disciplines.
• Participates in the development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes as well as contributing toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
• Participate in clinically relevant activities and attend UI Health Care APP council meetings and other conferences to enhance clinical and professional expertise.
• Maintains national and state licensing and certification requirements.
• Maintains compliances (University, UI Health Care, Departmental, etc.)
